Sheffield Wednesday experienced a quiet winter transfer window, with new boss Jos Luhukay adding just a single player to his squad over the course of the month.

Joey Pelupessy was brought in from Dutch side Heracles, with the defender making his Owls debut in the FA Cup win over Reading earlier in the month, and Luhukay has been content to work with the squad he inherited from former boss Carlos Carvalhal.

The Portuguese manager was removed from his role a few weeks ago, but will consider himself extremely unlucky after enjoying a solid summer transfer window before being blighted by injuries for much of the campaign.

Luhukay had time to source new players and decided against bolstering his squad ahead of the second half of the season, with the Dutchman sure to live to regret these mistakes made in the window…

Not adding depth

The Owls have been absolutely decimated by injuries this season, in a turn of events which played a significant role in putting Carlos Carvalhal out of a job.

Key men have fallen like flies, and with squad depth poor, the Hillsborough side just haven’t been able to cope with the pressure of the absence of their star men.

Luhukay had time following his appointment to bring players in, but opted for just the single signing.

Perhaps he was told to wait until the summer by chairman Dejphon Chansiri, or perhaps he felt his injured contingent ready to return.

This could be a decision he lives to regret if the injury curse strikes again.

Failing to land a new striker

Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper have showed bursts of form this season, but with the exception of Hooper, have been consistently absent when their side has needed them the most.

Kosovan Atdhe Nuhiu has been given a run in the side and is performing well, but the Owls cannot rely on the Eastern European striker to fire their side up the table this season.

The squad needed perhaps a loan signing from a Premier League side just to keep his attack fresh and others on their toes, but Luhukay failed, or refused to do so.

Another injury or a barren run, and Wednesday could begin to edge closer to the dreaded bottom three.
