Reading were rewarded for their patience in the transfer window and managed to secure two late deals with Tommy Elphick and Chris Martin joining the club.

Ex-Bournemouth centre-back Elphick arrived from Villa whilst Martin was a deadline day capture from Derby, with both players on loan to the Royals until the end of the season.

There were several outgoings too, with Roy Beerens and Adrian Popa two of the most noteworthy departures.

Reading take on Millwall tomorrow with the new signings sure to play a part and it comes on the back of a crucial win at Burton Albion in the week.

The 3-1 success eased any immediate concerns Royals fans may have had about relegation and created a six-point gap between them and the bottom three.

However, with the window now shut, Stam has to rely on his current squad to get the team up the table – but did he do enough in the window?

Here we look at two mistakes they made.

Not bringing in enough players

Firstly, there’s no doubting that Stam has a better squad now than when the window opened, they made two signings and keeping Liam Moore was key.

Yet, Reading are really struggling this season and it’s not down to bad luck or injuries. The Royals are simply way too inconsistent and can two players change everything?

In fairness, Stam addressed the two most concerning positions but you could make a case for more options being needed throughout the spine of the team.

At the start of the season the target would have been to challenge for the top six and this squad looks a long way off.

Of course, that has gone now but Stam should still be aiming high and the whole squad could’ve done with a real shake up which means that more than two players should’ve come through the door.

Chris Martin may not end issues up front

A striker arriving was a must for Reading and Chris Martin will improve the Royals, but you can make a case to say they should be aiming for better.

The Scotland international was a fine option at this level but that was a few years ago now.

Last year he scored ten goals for an attacking Fulham side, some of which were penalties and this year it’s just one goal in 23 games, ironically against Reading.

Obviously many of those appearances were as a sub so it looks worse than it is however it doesn’t disguise the fact he has struggled big time.

In such a pivotal position, Reading are taking something of a risk only bringing in the 29-year old.
