Nottingham Forest have had an extremely busy transfer window, with a change in personnel at managerial level kicking off proceedings at The City Ground.

Aitor Karanka was brought in to replace Mark Warburton, with the Spaniard enduring a difficult start to life in the East Midlands, with a 3-0 home hammering by mid-table Preston North End convincing the former Middlesbrough boss to go big on transfer deadline day.

A flood of signings arrived at The City Ground in the closing hours of the winter window, with the likes of Jack Colback, Costel Pantilimon and Adlene Guedioura all ushered through the doors before the window slammed shut.

In what was a mad rush with a tinge of panic by their new boss, mistakes were made along the way, with these two standing out above the rest…

Letting Zach Clough go

Zach Clough is a fantastic young player with bags of potential and Forest did well to secure his services last year, but Karanka allowed the forward to return to former club Bolton on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The player has been largely restricted to reserve team action this season, but many would argue he has been treated rather unfairly and was never given a chance to prove that he has what it takes to perform to a high standard on a weekly basis.

Clough will now help the Trotters avoid relegation at the bottom of the table, but a run of good form will leave Karanka rueing his decision to allow the starlet to head for the Macron Stadium this month.

Not recalling Jorge Grant

Grant has been setting League Two alight whilst enjoying a productive loan spell with city rivals Notts County, and his goals from midfield have elevated the youngster into one of the deadliest players in the division.

Grant is perhaps one of the brightest prospects on the books at Forest, and many fans were keen to see the player recalled over the winter period to battle for a place in the first-team in the red half of the East Midlands city.

Nabbing their fierce rivals best player as they look to secure promotion to League One also would have gone down well with fans, who will be left wondering whether Grant could have played a role in helping Forest mount a push for an unlikely playoff spot in the coming months.
