Neil Warnock was a very busy man in the January transfer window, making several changes to his Cardiff City squad as they look to secure promotion.

The most high-profile arrival was the deadline day capture of Gary Madine from Bolton Wanderers for a fee reported to be around £6m.

He was joined by Yanic Wildschut, Jamie Ward and Marko Grujic who made loan moves whilst Armand Traore arrived on a free.

However, there were a few surprising outgoings too, with Lee Tomlin heading to Nottingham Forest as part of the Ward deal and Omar Bogle went to Peterborough on loan.

On the whole, the transfer window has been greeted with a mixed reaction from Cardiff fans but there is a feeling that Warnock has improved his squad.

But, here we will look at two mistakes the Welsh side made in the past month.

Overspending on the wrong striker

Cardiff have been very cautious with their cash since Warnock took over so it was a real surprise to see Madine arrive for around £6m.

And, it had many questioning whether Cardiff had significantly overpaid.

There’s no doubt that Madine has had a fine season for Bolton but he is 27-years old and it’s the first time he has consistently performed in the second tier.

Whilst football transfers have gone mad since the summer, for £6m Cardiff could have attracted a better player for the promotion push.

Their rivals strengthened with the likes of Mitrovic, Afobe and Grabban and even though they were loan moves, is Madine going to be at Cardiff if they go up?

He was always going to cost a lot as Bolton desperately needed him but for such a fee there has to be questions why the money wasn’t used earlier in the window and on a better player.

It seems like a panic buy.

Will they miss Tomlin’s creativity?

Another questionable decision was to send Lee Tomlin on loan to Nottingham Forest.

The attacking midfielder has great talent and skill and Warnock should’ve persevered with him as it could make all the difference in tight games.

Jamie Ward is a feisty, hardworking option but he doesn’t possess the technique and creativity that Tomlin does.

It leaves Cardiff’s squad looking very similar. There are many attacking options but they all play in the same way, such as Wildschut, Feeney, Mendez-Laing and now Ward.

Tomlin didn’t always deliver but he had that bit of magic that Warnock should’ve tried to bring out instead of getting rid.
