Luton Town have managed to have a solid season in the Championship in Nathan Jones’ first campaign in charge and they are in a comfortable position in the table with nine games to play.

The Hatters have managed to accumulate just one point fewer already than they managed in the entirety of last term which shows the good progress that has been made at Kenilworth Road. Jones’ side will be aiming to finish off the campaign in a positive fashion and try and claim a top-half finish in the Championship.

It will then be an important summer for the Hatters to underline their progress by adding some wise additions to their squad to make them as competitive as possible once again next season. Luton need to invest wisely to enable them to continue to improve and also compete with sides above them in the table who operate on much larger budgets.

While we wait to see how the Hatters get on in their remaining games, we have put together a list of the club’s top 10 oldest ever players. Click ‘next’ to scroll through the list…

Currently, the tenth oldest player ever to have played for the Hatters is Paul Peschisolido, who makes this list having appeared for Luton at the age of 36 years, three months and 20 days old.

Peschisolido was signed by the Hatters back in July 2007 after his release from Derby County, he started the 2007/08 campaign in Luton’s squad and was an important option for them in League One. The forward featured in four league games and also managed to score what would prove to be his only goal for the club in a Football League Trophy match against Northampton Town.

However, he then suffered an ankle problem which eventually required surgery and would keep him out of action for the rest of the 2007/08 season. Following the end of the campaign, the Hatters decided to release him and allow him to leave the club after making just five appearances.

Since his retirement from the game, Peschisolido spent time in charge of Burton Albion before leaving the club with 31% win percentage from his 141 games in charge.

Coming in at number nine on this list is a player who had much more of an impact during his spell with the Hatters. Paul Benson makes the list having appeared for the club at the age of 36 years, four months and seven days old.

Benson signed for the Hatters on a permanent basis on a two-year deal back in the summer of 2014, after he enjoyed a successful loan period at Kenilworth Road during their promotion-winning 2013/14 season in which he registered 17 league goals in 37 appearances. The forward managed to make 21 appearances in League Two in 2014/15 but scored just once against Mansfield Town.

However, during that same match against Mansfield, Benson would suffer a broken leg that kept him out of action for a period. He returned to the squad and finished the campaign with 24 appearances in all competitions. The following year he managed to score four league goals in 20 appearances for the Hatters.

In the summer of 2016 Benson was allowed to leave the club and he eventually moved to Dagenham & Redbridge and he has since had spells with Boreham Wood and Bedford Town.

Coming in at eighth place on this list is goalkeeper Mervyn Day, who only spent a very brief period out on loan with the Hatters and that saw him make an appearance for them at the age of 36 years, eight months and 17 days.

Day spent a very brief period on loan with Luton from Leeds United in the second half of the 1991/92 season, which eventually saw the club relegated from the first division. The keeper managed to make just four appearances for the club, the last of which came during a 1-1 draw against Everton in March 1992.

Following his return to Leeds, the keeper was eventually allowed to leave the club and signed for Carlisle United. He spent just one year with them making 16 appearances before retiring in 1994. He later went on to have a spell in charge of Carlisle in 1996 to 1997. He has also worked as a coach at Charlton Athletic and West Ham and more recently was head of recruitment at West Brom.

In seventh place on this list is defender Alan Kimble, who makes this list having managed to feature for Luton at the age of 36 years, eight months and 27 days during a 2-1 defeat at Swindon Town in May 2003.

Kimble signed for Luton back in 2002 after he left Wimbledon and brought an end to a nine-year spell with the club. However, the defender was never able to really establish himself as the club’s first choice in his position and that saw him play more of a bit-part role for them during the 2002/03 campaign as they finished in ninth place in the second division.

The defender only managed to make 12 appearances for the club in total in that 2002/03 campaign and the decision was made for him to move down to non-league football with Dagenham & Redbridge. He spent just one year with them making 22 appearances before joining Heybridge Swifts and retiring in 2005.

Since then, Kimble has had spells in charge of the likes of Aveley and Maldon & Tiptree but he has not managed any side since 2015.

In at sixth place on this list is midfielder Don Hutchinson, who makes the list having made an appearance for the Hatters at the age of 36 years, 11 months and 24 days during a 1-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town in May 2008.

Hutchinson signed for the Hatters back in July 2007 fresh from his release from Coventry City that summer. He was signed by the club as they aimed to prepare for life back in League One after their relegation from the Championship. He managed to score his first and only goal for the club during a Football League Trophy clash with Northampton Town.

The midfielder would manage to make just 21 appearances for the club over the course of the 2007/08 campaign and could prevent them from suffering relegation down to League Two. However, he did also endear himself to supporters of the club by refusing to take home his final two wage packets with the club having financial issues.

Since his retirement from the game, Hutchinson has spent time working as a television pundit and also a commentator.

Coming in at fifth place on this list of Luton’s top ten oldest ever players is goalkeeper Marlon Beresford, who makes this list having appeared for the club at the age of 37 years, six months and 15 days during a 2-0 defeat at home to Ipswich Town in March 2007.

Beresford signed permanently for Luton back in 2004 after he had spent a period on loan with the Hatters during the 2003/04 campaign. He managed to establish himself as a reliable performer for the club and went on to spend four years with them. During which time he played an instrumental role in them winning the League One in 2004/05.

The following campaign he managed to make 41 appearances in the Championship as the Hatters finished the campaign in a respectable 10th place in the table. However, he was also part of the squads that went on to suffer back-to-back relegations to League Two before he eventually left in 2008.

He is currently working for Al-Shabab as a goalkeeping coach after spending time as a sports commentator.

Coming in at fourth place on this list is goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington, who makes this list having managed to make an appearance for the Hatters at the age of 37 years, ten months and 17 days during a goalless draw at home to Mansfield Town in January 2012.

Pilkington signed for the Hatters in the summer of 2010 after he had spent time out on loan with Luton from Notts County during the 2009/10 campaign in which he made eight appearances. The keeper initially signed a one-year deal and he went on to make three appearances for the club during the 2010/11 season in the Conference and was loaned out to Mansfield Town in October 2010.

The following campaign the keeper managed to make 15 appearances in all competitions and he left the club in at the end of the season. Since then, he has gone on to have spells as goalkeeping coach at Notts County and Cambridge United and is now with Barnsley in the Championship.

Coming in third on this list is another former Luton keeper in the shape of Mark Tyker, who managed to make an appearance for the Hatters at the age of 38 years, ten months and 28 days in a 1-0 win at home to Morecambe in March 2016.

Tyler was signed by Luton in the summer of 2009 after he was released by Peterborough United and he initially signed a two-year deal with the Hatters. The keeper managed to establish himself as a real fans’ favourite almost straight away going on to save two penalties in his first few months playing for them. In the 2009/10 campaign, he managed to help the club reach the play-offs.

The following year he was awarded the club’s Player of the Year award as the Hatters managed to finish third place in the table before losing the play-off final to AFC Wimbledon. After making 34 and 39 appearances in the next two terms he eventually helped the club earn promotion back to League Two in 2014. The keeper then made 31 and 27 appearances in the next two years before leaving in 2016.

Since leaving Luton, Tyler has worked as a goalkeeper coach with his former club Peterborough United.

Coming at second place on this list is former Luton forward Paul Furlong, who makes the list having managed to make an appearance for the Hatters at the age of 39 years, seven months and two days in a 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town in May 2008.

Furlong signed for the Hatters in the summer of 2007 after his exit from Queens Park Rangers and he was signed as the club looked to prepare for life back in League One. The forward would manage to make 32 appearances for them in the league during the 2007/08 campaign and scored a respectable tally of eight goals and 12 in all competitions which made him their joint-top scorer with Matthew Spring.

However, Furlong would leave the club that summer following their relegation down to League Two and he went on to sign for Southend United. He made just three appearances for them before having spells with the likes of Barnet, Kettering Town and St Albans City before retiring in 2012.

The forward is currently working back at QPR as an academy coach.

In at first place for Luton’s oldest ever players is defender Trevor Peake who managed to make his last ever appearance for the club at the age of 40 years and 222 days against Wrexham.

Peake was signed by the Hatters from Coventry City, with who he has won the FA Cup in 1987, in 1991 for a fee of around £100,000. He spent six years with the club in which time he was a hugely influential figure and spent time as the club’s captain. Although he was wearing the captain’s armband as they were relegated from the first division.

In 1997 Peake made the decision to retire from football and he was kept on by the Hatters becoming a coach at the football club. He later went on to enjoy spells working as a coach for the likes of Coventry City before spending 17 years in the coaching department of Leicester City before his retirement in 2020.
