Having been established 133 years ago, Barnsley have got a long and storied history in English football. 

The Yorkshire club have brought more than a few top players through their academy system in that time, some which have had success at Oakwell and others that have excelled for another side.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of the eight best graduates from the Tykes academy...

Maguire is now the Manchester United captain and one of the first names on England manager Gareth Southgate's teamsheet but it all began for him at Barnsley.

The centre-back came through the academy at Barnsley before making the switch to Sheffield United in 2009.

Maguire's cross-Manchester rival, Stones progressed through Barnsley's academy and made 28 appearances for the first team before Everton snapped him up.

The nearly £13 million in total transfer fees for the defender remains the club record.

Another defender that came through the ranks at Oakwell before making the switch to Goodison Park, Holgate joined the Tykes at the age of nine and made his debut aged 18.

The Englishman made just 20 appearances for Barnsley but has gone on to feature regularly for the Toffees.

Butterfield is something of a journeyman, having bounced around multiple EFL clubs over the last decade or so.

The 29-year-old joined the Barnsley academy from Manchester United and after coming through the ranks at the club, went on to make 89 appearances before leaving the Tykes in 2012.

Barnsley born and bred, Austin made nearly 150 appearances for the Tykes before leaving the club and played a key role in helping them to secure promotion to the Championship in 2006.

The defender's career was hampered by injuries but he still managed to have quite an impact for the Yorkshire club.

The journeyman striker fired in goals at all levels of English football bar the Premier League and learnt his trade at Barnsley.

Things never quite clicked for him at Oakwell but Parkin certainly had a fruitful career in the EFL.

Liddell's impressive career lasted nearly three decades, seeing him make close to 600 club appearances, and all began with the Tykes.

The Barnsley academy product spent seven years with the club before leaving to join Wigan Athletic in 1998.

Another player with nearly 600 club appearances to his name, Eaden came through at Barnsley in the early 90s and went on to make almost 300 appearances for the Tykes before his exit in 2000.

The defender was a key man in the side that made it to the Premier League for the 1997/98 campaign.
