Since then though, be it down to raw talent or the perception that youth is a cheaper option, managers at all levels have looked to introduce younger players to their squads.

Here we look at the 7 youngest squads currently in the Championship, with data supplied by Transfermarkt....

Reading have had a mixed start to the 2019-20 season, currently down in 17th spot having suffered four defeats already this season.

Jose Gomes' squad includes a wide age range of players with the three youngest being attacking midfielder Michael Olise (17), goalkeeper Joao Virginia (19) and centre-forward Danny Loader (19).

Overall the average Reading squad age is 25.3 years.

Preston North End manager Alex Neil has assembled the largest first team squad in the Championship with 34 players.

Of that squad three players are under 20-years-old including left-back Jack Armer (18), defensive midfielder Jack Baxter and central midfielder Adam O'Reilly (18).

Overall though the average age of the Preston squad is 25.2 years.

Almost a quarter of Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United squad is under the age of 20-years-old, proving that the Argentine is keen to promote youth within his sides.

There are four 19-year-olds plus central midfielder Mateusz Bogusz (18) and on-loan winger Jack Clarke (18) who make up the sub-20-year-old contingent.

Overall the average age of the Leeds squad is 25.1 years.

Hull City are fourth in our list and this is despite the fact that only one of their squad, left-back Brandon Fleming (19) is under 20-years of age.

Overall though the average age of the Tigers 27 man squad is 25.0 years.

New Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley will certainly need to get the best out of his younger players if he is the turn things around after the Terriers poor start to the season.

The 26-man squad includes six 20-year-olds plus goal-keeper Ryan Schofield (19) and attacking midfielder Matty Daly (18).

Overall the average age of the Huddersfield squad is 24.3 years.

Brentford have had a mixed start to the season, with manager Thomas Frank's first team squad including over of a third of players aged 20-years-of-age or under.

The sub-20's include goal-keeper Patrik Gunnarsson (18), left-back Dominic Thompson (19) plus central midfielders Dru Yearwood (19), Jan Zamburek (18) and Jaakko Oksanen (18). Overall the average age of the Brentford squad is 23.7 years.

So finally we come to the squad with the youngest average age in the Championship and the award goes to Barnsley.

Daniel Stendel's 28-man squad includes right-back Jordan Williams (19), attacking midfielder Callum Styles (19) and left-winger Elliot Simoes (19) plus five 20-year-olds and six 21-year-olds.

This gives the Tykes an overall average age of 22.6 years.
