Huddersfield Town have been enduring a season of transition since they suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, with the Terriers battling out down the bottom end of the table to ensure they survive this term.

The Terriers achieved promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs against the odds under David Wagner in the 2016/17 season, and that gave the club the platform to invest into their squad and break their club record transfer fee multiple times over the four transfer windows they were in the division for.

Since the Terriers suffered relegation though, they have had to cut back on their spending to re-adjust to life back in the Championship, and the Yorkshire club will be looking to build another squad capable of getting them back to the Premier League over the next few years.

Here though, we take a look at SIX of the biggest transfer fees Huddersfield have ever forked out, with all of them having been signed during the last few years…

The most expensive signing Huddersfield have ever made so far in their history was Terence Kongolo, who made the move to the permanent move from AS Monaco to the Terriers in the summer of 2018 ahead of their second successive season in the Premier League, for a fee believed to be around £17.5million according to the Huddersfield Examiner.

The versatile defender, who is capable of playing either at centre-back on in the full-back positions, had spent time on loan with Huddersfield in the 2017/18 season helping them secure their Premier League status, but he was unable to help them stay up last term and has since been loaned out to Fulham in January, after falling out of favour under Danny Cowley.

Steve Mounie became Huddersfield’s record signing when they made the move for the striker in the summer of 2017, bringing him in from Ligue 1 Montpellier for a reported £11.44million, and the 25-year-old made an immediate impression with a goal on his debut in a win at Crystal Palace, before scoring a further six times in the Premier League to help keep the Terriers in the league.

Last season though, Mounie was only able to score twice in 31 Premier League appearances, as the Terriers suffered relegation to the Championship, but he has emerged as a key player for the club again this term under Cowley netting six goals in 19 appearances in the Championship so far.

Huddersfield’s current third highest outlay on a single player was on Isaac Mbenza last summer, with the attacker arriving on a permanent deal from Montpellier for a fee of around £11.25million, according to Transfermarkt, which came following the 23-year-old’s performances during a loan spell with the club in the Premier League last season.

Mbenza had managed to make 22 Premier League appearances for the Terriers last term, scoring one and assisting one, but he has really struggled to make any impact this term making just five Championship appearances, before Cowley decided to ship him out on loan to Amiens SC for the rest of the campaign – and it will be interesting to see what happens with his future in the summer.

The Terriers’ fourth biggest transfer outlay was on Alex Pritchard in January 2018 with the 26-year-old arriving from Norwich City, for a reported fee of £10million rising to £12million, to help add some extra creativity as Huddersfield looked to secure their top flight status - and he managed to score one goal and assist one goal in the second half of the 2017/18 season.

Pritchard, though, was only able to score two goals in 30 Premier League appearances last term for the Terriers, and has since found his chances to impress this season in the Championship limited due to injury troubles, which has seen him make just nine appearances in the league so far this term.

Huddersfield’s fifth most expensive ever signing was Adama Diakhaby when he made the move from AS Monaco in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £9million, according to Transfermarkt, and the winger went on to make 12 appearances in the Premier League as the club were relegated last season.

The winger has struggled to make a positive impression this season, with Diakhaby only managing to provide two assists in 18 Championship appearances, before the decision was made to send him out loan to Nottingham Forest in January.

Another one of Huddersfield's most expensive signings was Aarron Mooy, with the Terriers paying a reported fee of £8million rising to £10million for the midfielder in the summer of 2017, after he had helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League during a loan spell in the 2016/17 season.

Mooy went on to be an integral figure for the Terriers in the 2017/18 season as they survived in the Premier League, but he was unable to replicate the same high levels of performance last term as Huddersfield were relegated – and the midfielder joined Brighton on loan last summer and that move has since been made permanent in January.
