Cardiff City have certainly seen what could be described as mixed levels of success when it comes to the club's record transfer purchases.

Each of the Bluebirds' record buys came during their two Premier League stints in the 2013/14 and 2018/19 seasons, and the fact Cardiff were relegated in both these campaigns provides an indication of the success of these transfers.

There are certainly some big names on this list of the Bluebirds' biggest investments, but it would be fair to say that most of the players struggled to live up to the hype.

Here, we take a look at Cardiff's six record buys...

Cornelius was signed by Cardiff from Copenhagen in 2013 for a then club-record fee of £7.8million, but the striker only made 11 appearances for the Bluebirds as his time in the Welsh capital did not quite go to plan.

The Norwegian did not even score a goal for the Welsh side before returning to Copenhagen in January 2014.

Cardiff added former Swansea man Caulker to their ranks ahead of the 2013/14 top-flight campaign, but the defender could not help keep the Bluebirds afloat during their maiden Premier League season.

Caulker made a total of 39 appearances in all competitions for Cardiff before sealing a move to QPR during the following summer. He cost Cardiff £11.24million.

The Bluebirds secured Reid's services from Bristol City for just over £10million in the summer of 2018, with Neil Warnock looking to boost his attacking options ahead of Cardiff's 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

Reid netted five goals in 30 appearances for Cardiff before joining Fulham on loan at the start of the season, and this move was then made permanent in the January window.

Murphy is another player snapped up by Cardiff ahead of their second Premier League campaign, with the winger arriving at the Welsh capital's club for a £10.25million fee from Norwich.

The attacker has netted nine goals in 54 appearances during his mixed stint in South Wales, but he is currently in a rich vein of goalscoring form for Neil Harris' side.

The club's transfer record was broken to lure Medel to Cardiff ahead of the 2013/14 season, with the Chile international costing the Bluebirds a reported £11.7million ahead of their first Premier League adventure.

Medel made 35 appearances during his solitary season for the club before his switch to Inter Milan following the Bluebirds' relegation.

Cardiff signed Sala for a club-record fee halfway through their 2018/19 Premier League season, but the striker did not make an appearance for the club before his tragic death in January 2019.

The former Nantes man cost the Bluebirds a reported £15.3million at the time.
