With first Jack Walker and now the Venkys, it's probably fair to say there have been times in Blackburn Rovers' recent history when they have had the financial ability to spend some rather significant transfer fees on a number of high-profile signings.

But while those signings have attracted plenty of attention on the pitch for Rovers, they have not always been matched by the varying degrees of success brought about by those players on the pitch, something which has been the case for the Ewood Park club both in the Premier League and the Championship.

Here, we've taken a look at the six biggest transfer fees ever spent by Blackburn, and reflect on just what they got for their money.

After enjoying a 20-goal season for Ternana in the Italian second-tier in the 2000/01 campaign, Grabbi was signed by Blackburn for £6.75million in the summer of 2001, to lead the line upon the clubs return to the Premier League following promotion the season before.

That is something Grabbi never managed to do. He scored just two goals in 30 top-flight appearances during his time at Ewood Park, before returning to his native Italy in 2004, where he was unable to rediscover that form that had earned him a move to the Premier League in the first place.

One that Rovers fans will feel still has the potential to go either way, things have yet to really work out for Ben Brereton since his £7million move from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest last summer.

A flurry of missed chances early in his Rovers career and just one goal in 38 appearances in total for the club is not the return anyone around the club would have been hoping for so far.

But with plenty of time left in his career and contract, and something of a game-changing cameo in a 3-0 win over Hull earlier this month to build on, there is room for belief that Brereton can change his Ewood Park fortunes for the better.

Joining from Scottish giants Rangers in the summer of 2003 for £7.5million, Ferguson is one name on this list whose time at Ewood Park simply did not work out.

Despite manager Graeme Souness handing Ferguson the captain's armband a year after the midfielder's arrival, Ferguson returned to Rangers midway through his second season at Ewood Park for £4.5million, after handing in written transfer request, later claiming that he the prospect of a Lancashire derby at Bolton had failed to motivate him in the same way as an Old Firm meeting with Celtic.

Another £7.5million signing, Kevin Davies is another bit of recruitment you imagine most Rovers fans would probably rather forget.

The striker was a club-record fee for Rovers when they paid that amount to Southampton for Davies in 1998, but after just one league in 23 league appearances for the Lancashire club, Davies was back at St Mary's barely a year later, before going on to represent Blackburn's Lancashire rivals Bolton and Preston later in his career.

Surely the most successful name on this list, Jordan Rhodes is one who certainly lived up to the hype when Blackburn equalled their club-record transfer fee of £8million to bring the striker to Huddersfield from Ewood Park following relegation from the Premier League in 2012.

Rhodes scored 27 goals during his debut season with the club to earn Rovers' Player of the Season award, and would go on to net 85 goals in 169 appearances in all competitions for the club before leaving for Middlesbrough in January 2016 for a reported £9million.

Rhodes struggled to recreate that goalscoring form for Middlesbrough following their promotion to the Premier League later that year, and has since suffered similar problems back at Championship level with both Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich.

Joining Blackburn from Manchester United in December 2001, Cole became Rovers' club-record signing when he joined for £8million.

It was a move that would prove reasonably successful for Rovers, with Cole scoring 37 goals in exactly 100 appearances for the club, including the winning goal in the 2002 League Cup final win over Tottenham, while also helping the club qualify for the UEFA Cup via the league the following season.

After leaving Ewood Park in 2004, Cole went on to play for the likes of Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Birmingham, Nottingham Forest, and for a brief loan spell in 2008, Rovers' local rivals Burnley, before he retired later that same year.
