Sheffield United are a club rich with history and despite currently playing down in League One, are still quite a big name in the English game in general.

Scorers of the first ever Premier League goal and playing in the oldest stadium to still be hosting professional football, the club arguably should be higher than it is at present.

During their existence, which spans 125 years, the Blades have seen some excellent players come through the doors, as well as bad ones.

A selection of these players will go down though in history at the Lane not for their performances or consistent brilliance, but for small bits of individuality what endear them to home fans.

This could be one moment of brilliance, an iconic piece of play, or something completely different, but there will always be those players who form that special bond with fans.

Here at FLW, we have identified FIVE players who have cult hero status at Sheffield United........

Tony Currie

Probably the all time cult hero at Bramall Lane, Currie is often voted the club's greatest ever player in fan opinion polls.

The gifted midfield player made over 300 appearances for the club over the course of an 8 year stay, and scored well over 50 goals during that time.

More than that though, it was his style of play and all around talent which would impress fans the most, indeed during one game he chose to sit on the ball while mid dribble, demonstrating the bravado of the man.

Currie scored one of the most famous goals in Match of the Day history, prompting the famous quote from John Motson of “a quality goal, from a quality player”.

Currie is still with the club now, and acts as an ambassador and leader of the club's football in the community programme.

Brian Deane

Brian Deane

I cannot do a cult hero list and not include the striking sensation that was Brian Deane.

Scorer of the first ever Premier League goal, Deane is a cult hero of phenomenal status at Bramall Lane. Chants of ‘Deano, Deano!!’ are still belted out on the terraces whenever the crowd favourite is at the lane, and he remains close to United fans' hearts.

Deane spent three separate spells with the club, but it was his initial spell in the late 80s and early 90s which shot him to fame.

He formed a formidable partnership with fellow strike ace Tony Agana and excelled under then manager Dave Bassett.

Deane is a shoe in for this list, and it is a travesty when you look at it that he only got 3 England caps.

Bob Booker

Signed from Brentford by Dave Bassett in 1988, Booker would prove to be an inspired signing and one that fans learnt to love and adore.

Brought in to aid a growing injury crisis with the club, Booker would go on to surprise many and become a key member of the team as it climbed up the football league and into Division One.

Booker would regularly deliver full blooded displays in the middle of the park, and Blades fans became endeared to the man who built a reputation for always having time for his fans.

Fans remember Booker with the chant of “Ooh, Ah, Bob Booker”, and it remains one of the crowd’s favourites from over the years.

Eddie Colquhoun

Over 400 appearances and full blooded displays between 1968 and 1978, mean Colquhoun is a shoe in for this list.

Still revered by fans with chants on the terraces today, the midfielder would prove to be a brilliant signing when he moved from West Brom.

He was instrumental in the side which won promotion to Division One in 1971, and would go on to be a regular in the team over his decade stay with the club.

Another cult hero at the club, Colquhoun won 9 caps for Scotland, and arguably deserved far for given his talent and commitment.

Chris Morgan

A more up to date selection, but Chris Morgan is a certainty.

Signed from local rivals Barnsley in 2003, Morgan would go on to spend over 10 years at the club as player, coach, and even a spell as caretaker manager, before departing for Chesterfield with Danny Wilson earlier this season.

He made over 250 appearances for the Blades, which included a promotion to the Premier League, as well as the dreaded relegation.

Morgan was everything the Blades fans asked for in a player, heart, passion, and commitment, but above all that he was actually an excellent defender.

Chris Morgan makes this list with ease, and the Blades fans to this day are crying out for the club to sign a centre half with even half of his ability and passion.

Blades fans, what do you think? Agree? Who would make your list? Let us know in the comments!
