Sheffield United have had an outstanding season on their return to the Premier League after a 13-year absence.

Sat seventh in the table with a game in hand on most of their rivals, they only face a five-point gap to the Champions League places.

Chris Wilder has done an incredible job since taking charge in 2016, but he has been backed during the transfer market bringing in Lys Mousset, Oli McBurnie and Sander Berge for £10m, £20m and £22m respectively.

However, their squad still includes plenty of players that were crucial in sealing promotion last season, with Enda Stevens, George Baldock, John Egan, Chris Basham, Jack O'Connell and John Fleck all impressing.

The season is suspended until April 30 at the earliest though, which means Wilder and his side will need to wait and find out whether they can continue their fight for Europeans places, with it currently unknown how and when the season will be concluded.

In the absence of football, we look at the five top earners at Sheffield United according to Capology data.

Joined on loan from Everton in the summer, Besic has struggled to depose Fleck, John Lundstram and Oliver Norwood. Has made 13 appearances in all competitions so far.

Arrived on loan during the January window, Retsos has made just one appearance so far. Aged just 21, he is highly rated but may not get a chance to show that for the Blades.

Another loan signing completed during the January window, United have an option-to-buy on the 23-year-old Dutch youth international.

Arrived for £22m from Genk in January, the 22-year-old Norway international is very highly rated and has impressed early on in his Bramall Lane career.

Returned to the Blades after a 12-year absence, the 37-year-old is a highly experienced Premier League campaigner. His game time has been limited so far but he is an important figure in the dressing room.
