Danny Cowley made a fantastic start to life at Portsmouth, winning his first two games in charge over the Fratton Park club.

Those results certainly hinted at a positive run of life under Cowley at Fratton Park and we'll have to see just how things play out in the weeks to come.

The South Coast club have got some big games to come in the play-off hunt and it will be fascinating to see how they do between now and the end of the year.

It's early days but it already looks as though the decision to replace Kenny Jackett could prove a vital one for the Fratton Park outfit.

Pompey supporters will be eagerly awaiting their next chance to see their side in action but to keep you entertained until then, we've scoured Transfermarkt's records to find the top 10 oldest players to ever feature for Portsmouth...

We start our list with Ashley Westwood, who was 35 years, 11 months, and 14 days old when he played his first and only game for the South Coast club.

Not to be confused with the current Burnley midfielder, the centre-back came through the Manchester United academy before starting his professional career with Crewe in the late 1990s.

The defender arrived at Fratton Park nearly 20 years later as part of Michael Appleton's coaching staff but he ended up featuring for the South Coast club due to financial issues.

His only appearance came in a 3-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at Home Park but it did earn him a place on this list.

Kenny Swain made his name in spells with Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest before he joined Pompey in 1985.

The defender proved a very useful signing for the South Coast club, notching up more than 100 appearances before he left three years after his arrival.

By featuring for the club at the age of 36 years, 2 months, and 12 days – in the final game of the 1987/88 campaign against Everton – Swain is the ninth oldest player to have played for Portsmouth – according to Transfermarkt.

After he left Fratton Park, the right-back featured for Crewe Alexandra before hanging up his boots.

There is no love lost between Portsmouth and Southampton but that hasn't stopped a fair few players and a manager or two going between the two South Coast rivals.

David Connolly was one such player, though he did leave the Saints some five months before signing for Pompey.

The Irish forward made 37 appearances for the South Coast club, featuring for them in both League One and League Two.

Connolly's last game came against Mansfield Town in January 2014 at the age of 36 years, 7 months, and 12 days old – with the League Two game ending as a 1-1 draw.

Gavin Mahon had a long EFL career, with his most significant spells coming with Wolves, QPR, and Notts County, but his time at Fratton Park lasted less than two months.

The midfielder was a free agent when Pompey signed him in October 2013, having left Notts County earlier that year, but at the end of November he was gone.

Mahon made just three appearances for the South Coast club, the last of which came at the age of 36 years, 10 months, and 7 days old, and saw Pompey beaten 2-1 by Stevenage as they were knocked in the FA Cup first round.

One of Pompey's 2008 FA Cup heroes, Hermann Hreidarsson tasted that success in his first season at the club having joined on a free transfer from Charlton Athletic.

When he left to join Coventry City in January 2012, the Icelandic defender had made 123 appearances in his four and a half years at the South Coast club.

His final appearance came at the age of 37 years, 1 month, and 2 days old in a 1-0 defeat to Brighton, earning him sixth place on this list.

A brief spell at Coventry followed his Pompey exit before a move back to Iceland with ÍBV and Fylkir.

Given goalkeepers usually outlast their outfield counterparts, it's no surprise that David Forde is one of three shot-stoppers on this list.

The Irishman was never on Portsmouth's books as a permanent player but spent the 2o16/17 season on loan from Millwall and was a regular fixture.

The former Republic of Ireland international played every single League Two game for Pompey that season – keeping 19 clean sheets as his side won the division and were promoted.

Forde's last game for the club was at the age of 37 years, 4 months, and 16 days old – the 6-1 win against Cheltenham Town that confirmed the League Two title.

It may surprise a few supporters to see Christian Dailly's name on this list, given his stay at Fratton Park lasted just a few months.

The Scottish defender signed on a free transfer from Charlton Athletic in July 2011 but was released by Pompey in September that year having made just two appearances for the South Coast club.

The last of those was at the age of 37 years, 9 months, and 17 days, and saw Dailly start in Portsmouth's 1-0 defeat to Barnet in the EFL Cup.

The Scotsman joined Southend United in March 2012 before hanging up his boots in July that year.

Teddy Sheringham spent just the one season at Fratton Park – scoring 10 times in his 36 appearances in the 2003/04 campaign.

The former England international then departed for east London, signing for West Ham United in a spell that would prove very fruitful – seeing the striker score 21 goals as he fired them up to the Premier League in his debut season.

Sheringham's longevity is much discussed and with that in mind, it's no surprise that he features so high on this list having played for Pompey at the age of 38 years, 1 month and 13 days old.

The second of three goalkeepers on this list, David James spent four years with Pompey before leaving to join Bristol City on a free transfer.

In all, the former England international notched up more than 150 appearances for the South Coast club and was integral in their FA Cup success in 2008 – playing every single minute of every game in their run to Wembley and keeping a clean sheet in the final.

With that in mind, it's fitting that James is number two on our list having featured for Pompey at the age of 39 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

The only player above 40 on this list, Dave Beasant is the oldest player in Portsmouth history having featured for them at the age of 43 years, 1 month and 1 day old.

Beasant's time at Fratton Park was relatively short despite having two spells with the South Coast club. He joined from Nottingham Forest in 2001 before briefly moving to Spurs and then returning to Portsmouth.

Remarkably, Pompey were not his final club and the shot-stopper featured for both Bradford City, Wigan, Brighton, and Fulham before hanging up his boots.

The journeyman keeper can also boast the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle, Wolves, and Southampton among the other clubs he represented.
