Gillingham have had their fair share of experienced players over the years who have come and gone from the Priestfield Stadium.

The Gills are currently playing their football in League One, and will be hoping they can make a late push for a top-six finish in the third-tier.

They're currently sat tenth in the table, and are just two points adrift of the play-off positions, which makes for promising reading heading into their final eight matches of this year's campaign.

We take a look at the top-ten oldest players to ever feature for Gillingham, but can you remember all of them?

Find out who kicks us off at number ten, on the next page....

Stuart Nelson is first up at number ten, with the former Gillingham goalkeeper making his final appearance for the club at the age of 36 years and two months old.

The shot-stopper signed for the club in 2012, and went on to spend six years at Priestfield Stadium, before departing in 2018, after agreeing to terminate his contract with the Gills.

Nelson went on to sign for Yeovil Town shortly after the termination of his contract with Gillingham, but after making 223 appearances for them, he has since moved onto another club.

The 39-year-old is currently with Crawley Town, but has rarely featured for the League Two side since signing for them in 2020.

Deon Burton is next up, with the former Gillingham forward coming in at number nine on the list, after featuring for Gillingham at the age of 36 years and five months old.

The experienced forward had previously played for the likes of Portsmouth, Derby County and Rotherham United before signing for Gillingham in 2012. He went on to score 13 goals in 43 appearances for the club, which included his final appearance against AFC Wimbledon, in a 2-2 draw between the two teams.

Burton went on to sign for Scunthorpe United, where he spent two years with them in total. Brief spells with York City and Brackley Town followed that, before he signed for Worcester City in 2015.

That's the club where Burton called time on his playing career after one season with the non-league side.

Iwan Roberts is in at number eight, with the former Gillingham forward making his last appearance for the club at the age of 36 years and seven months old.

The Welshman's last appearance for the club came against Millwall, in a game that finished 0-0 back in February 2005.

Roberts called time on his playing career in August 2005, which brought an end to an impressive spell in front of goal. He had previously been on the books with the likes of Watford, Huddersfield Town and Leicester City.

But it was at Norwich City where he made his name, before signing for the Gills in 2004, after a seven-year spell with the Canaries at Carrow Road.

Ian Cox is at number seven on the list, with the former Gillingham man making his last appearance for the club at the age of 36 years and 11 months old.

The former Gills centre-back's final appearance for the club came against Hartlepool United back in March 2008, but it didn't end well for Cox, as they were thrashed 4-0 on the day.

He signed for the club in 2003 after previously playing for the likes of Bournemouth and Burnley, and spent five years with Gillingham in total.

Cox departed the club in 2008, as he went on to sign for Maidstone United, before calling time on his playing career in 2015 after a spell with Whitstable Town.

Crichton is next on the list at number six, with the former Gillingham goalkeeper last featuring for the club at the age of 37 years and 12 days old.

His final appearance for the Gills came against Yeovil Town in October 2015, and he kept a clean-sheet as they drew 0-0.

Crichton had spells with Grimsby Town, Burnley and Accrington Stanley before moving to Priestfield Stadium in 2005 in a player/coach role. But his spell with the club was a brief one, as he departed in 2006.

He called time on his playing days in 2011 after a spell with Sheffield United, and was most recently working as an assistant with Miami FC.

Matt Lawrence is the first name in the top-five, with the former Gillingham defender making his final appearance for the club at the age of 37 years and seven months old.

The centre-back's final game for the club came against Southend United back in February 2012, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat on the day.

Lawrence had previously been on the books with the likes of Fulham, Wycombe Wanderers, Millwall and Crystal Palace, before signing for Gillingham in 2010.

After a brief spell with Whitehawk upon leaving Gillingham in 2012, Lawrence finished his playing career with Burgess Hill Town in 2015.

Simon Royce is next up, with the former Gillingham goalkeeper featuring for the club at the age of 38 years and four months old.

His final appearance for the club came against Accrington Stanley, in a 1-0 defeat for the Gills back in January 2010.

Royce re-signed for Gillingham for the 2019/20 as a coach, but was named as a substitute in a game against Oxford United, although he wasn't called upon in that one.

He was then released when his contract reached a conclusion at the end of the 2019/20 season, which brought an end to his playing career.

Nicky Southall is the first name in the top-three, with the former Gillingham midfielder making his last appearance for the club at the age of 38 years and nine months old.

That appearance came against Dover Athletic in November 2010, in what was his second spell with the Gills, having originally left the club in 2005 in favour of a move to Nottingham Forest.

His fourth stay with the Gills was a brief one though, as that outing against Dover Athletic proved to be the only appearance in his two-year spell at the Priestfield Stadium.

Southall had previously been manager of Dover Athletic, which was a role he took back in 2018.

Steve Claridge narrowly misses out on top spot on the list, as he made his last appearance for Gillingham at the age of 39 years and four months old.

The striker signed for the club in 2005, but his stay with the Gills was a brief one, as he departed later that year.

Claridge went on to play for the likes of Bradford City, Weymouth and Gosport Borough later down the line, before calling time on his playing career whilst with non-league side Salisbury.

He has since gone on to manage the likes of Portsmouth, Millwall and Salisbury.

Andy Hessenthaler is Gillingham's oldest ever player, with the former Gills midfielder making his final appearance for the club in December 2005 at the age of 40 years and three months old.

That appearance was against Port Vale, in a comfortable 3-0 win for the Gills on the day. Hessenthaler signed for Gillingham back in 1996, and went on to spend ten years with the club.

He then moved to Barnet in 2006, before finishing his playing career with Dover Athletic.

Hessenthaler then moved into management with the Gills, before moving to the likes of Leyton Orient and Eastleigh. But he's now the manager of Dover Athletic, who have been relegated from the Vanarama National League, after having their season concluded early due to off-the-field problems.
