Brentford are gunning for promotion from the Sky Bet Championship again this season as they look to finally make it into the Premier League.

It looks like Norwich City and then one other for the top two spots in the second tier with the Bees joined by Swansea City and Watford in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League at the moment.

Certainly, they'll want to avoid another play-off battle if they can as they know what a lottery that can be but it remains to be seen if they manage to do that.

That said, whilst we wait to see what they do let's take a look at some of the oldest players to have represented the Bees over the years.

With the help of transfermarkt, here are the top ten oldest players to have ever featured for the west London side, with some well-known names in there...

Marcus Gayle is 10th on our list.

He made his name initially at Brentford with the Bees his first senior club as he played for them between 1988 and 1994.

He made over 150 league appearances for the Bees before moving to Wimbledon where he spent another seven years of his career, making over 230 league appearances.

A brief spell at Rangers and a four-year stint at Watford followed before he ended up back at Brentford where he became their 10th oldest-ever player.

Scott Fitzgerald is ninth on our list.

Most of his appearances in his career came for either Wimbledon or Colchester United.

He was at Wimbledon between 1989 and 1997 as he made over 100 league appearances with a spell at Millwall following for three years after some loans.

He joined Colchester in 2000 and was there for four years, playing over 110 times for them in the league.

He joined Brentford in 2004 and made 21 league appearances for them between a loan and permanent spell before leaving in 2005.

Most of Ricky Newman's appearances in his professional career came for either Millwall or Reading.

At Millwall, he made 150 league appearances between 1995 and 2000 before leaving the Lions.

He would then make 114 league appearances during his permanent stay at Reading between 2000 and 2005, with a handful more during a loan spell just before that.

He moved to Brentford in the 05/06 season and made 30 league appearances in that campaign, before moving to Aldershot Town.

John Salako is seventh on our list.

He is, of course, best known for his time at Crystal Palace between 1985 and 1996 which saw him make over 200 league appearances for the club, with it potentially even more had he not, at times, suffered with injuries.

A flying winger in his pomp, Salako made 5 appearances for England during his career and made over 100 league appearances for Reading later on in his playing days.

He joined Brentford in 04/05 and made 35 league appearances before retiring.

Bankole played for a number of clubs during his career and one of those was Brentford towards the end of his days as a goalkeeper.

Most of his days he was a second-choice stopper and his appearances never really piled up - at least in the Football League as he only made six for the Bees during the 05/06 season for example.

However, a spell at Crewe Alexandra was a bit more fruitful for him with him playing 50+ times between 2000 and 2004.

He retired in 2008 having been on the books at Colchester United last.

Forster was initially at Brentford between 1994 and 1997 where he made over 100 appearances in the league for them.

He moved on to the likes of Birmingham City, Ipswich Town, Hull City, Brighton and Hove Albion and perhaps most notably Reading, where he played for six years between 1999 and 2005 - making over 180 league appearances for them.

He returned to Brentford for one season in 10/11 where he made 18 league appearances before dropping into non-league with Lingfield and then Dover Athletic.

He has also been a coach since, with Staines Town his last job as a manager.

Javi Venta is fourth on our list.

His foray into English football was a short one, with Brentford the only English club he ever signed for and, indeed, he made only the one league appearance for them right at the end of his career.

He had played for the likes of Villarreal, Gimnastica and Levante during his playing career in Spain and the hope obviously was that that sort of experience would prove beneficial on the Brentford squad as they played in League One for the 13/14 season.

However, he returned to Spain for personal reasons just a few months into his one-year contract with the Bees.

Steve Claridge is third on our list and would probably make a lot of club's top ten oldest players in truth given how many sides he played for and how long his playing career also went on for.

It started at Fareham Town and ended with Salisbury with him making over 800 appearances during his career between 1983 and 2017.

Indeed, he joined Brentford in 04/05 so very much in the middle of his career, if you want to look at it that way.

He made four league appearances for the Bees and did not manage to get a goal with him moving to Wycombe Wanderers soon after.

Ron Harris is second on our list with him making well over 600 appearances for Chelsea and that being the period of his career that he is naturally most famous for.

He was known as 'Chopper' for the way he stoutly defended - to put it kindly - and was part of a Chelsea side that regularly ruffled feathers in the 60s and 70s - with their clashes against Leeds United perhaps most notorious of all.

He moved to Brentford after his time at the Blues came to an end and featured over 60 times for the Bees before retiring in the mid-80s after a short spell at Aldershot.

Goalkeeper Simon Royce tops our list.

He had several clubs during his career with his time at Southend United perhaps the most significant with him making over 140 league appearances for them between 1991 and 1998.

Other clubs he played for included Charlton, Leicester City, Queens Park Rangers and Gillingham before he wound up at Brentford in 2010/11.

He made just the two league appearances for the Bees as he came to the end of his playing career.

He's since become a goalkeeper coach.
