Barnsley have enjoyed a simply remarkable season in the Championship under Valerien Ismael.

The Tykes escaped relegation on the final day of last season under Gerhard Struber, but looked to be heading down that road before the Austrian departed earlier this campaign.

Ismael has come in and done a tremendous job at the helm thus far, though, guiding Barnsley to an impressive fifth place in the Championship.

Ismael's high-intensity, attacking style of play is really getting the best out of the club's younger players.

Callum Styles is thriving at left wing-back, Callum Brittain is also doing so on the other side. Daryl Dike and Carlton Morris are looking threatening in the final third, and the defence looks solid as well.

On the contrary, Barnsley don't have too many older, more experienced players in their ranks. Can you remember the oldest player ever to feature for Barnsley?

Check out our list to see who the top 10 oldest are...

Kicking off our list is Danny Wilson.

Wilson has had two spells in charge of Barnsley between 1994 to 1998 and 2013 to 2015.

He finished his playing career at Oakwell, though, spending the final two years of his career at Barnsley.

In September 1994, he featured in a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James' Park at the age of 34 years, 8 months and 20 days old.

His most recent managerial spell came with Chesterfield, but was dismissed by the club before they fell into League Two back in 2017.

Former Trinidad and Tobago international Jason Scotland appears at number nine on our list.

Scotland joined Barnsley from Ipswich Town in 2013, after spending three years at Portman Road in total.

He was to spend a brief amount of time at Oakwell, though, and undoubtedly his most important goal came against Huddersfield Town in a 2-2 draw. The goal saw Barnsley retain their place in the Championship.

The following season, he featured in a 2-1 defeat to Coventry City aged 34 years, 10 months and 17 days old.

He later had spells with Hamilton and Stenhousemuir.

At number eight is former Barnsley number one David Preece.

Sunderland-born Preece spent three years at Oakwell after arriving from OB in 2009.

He spent the first half of his first season at Barnsley competing with Luke Steele for a place in the side, and ended up making seven league appearances for the club.

In August 2011, he featured in a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton aged 34 years, 11 months and 18 days old.

He went on to have two spells at Lincoln City, as well as spending time back in Iceland with Keflavik.

Darren Moore picked up his first victory in charge of Sheffield Wednesday against his former club last week.

Moore joined Barnsley from Derby County in 2008, scoring twice for the club and making over 70 league appearances in total.

In May 2010, he featured against another one of his former clubs in West Bromwich Albion, helping them to a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns aged 36 years and 10 days old.

He's now in charge of Wednesday, of course, hoping to help them move away from the relegation zone in the Championship.

Moore left Barnsley in 2010 and joined Burton Albion before finishing his career as a player.

In at number six is Geoff Thomas.

Thomas is an established professional who had spells with the likes of Rochdale, Crewe Alexandra, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

In 1999 he joined Barnsley from Forest, but struggled for regular game time and was used mostly as a substitute.

He then went on to have spells with Notts County and Crewe before finishing his career in 2002.

He featured for Barnsley aged 36 years and 23 days old in a 4-1 thumping at Birmingham City in 2000.

Taylor comes in at number five on our list.

Taylor only had a brief spell at Barnsley and made only three first-team appearances for the club. In 1997, he signed for Wycombe Wanderers and had six years with the club.

In his final year at Wycombe, he moved on loan to Barnsley and featured three times for the club.

In 2003, he featured in a 2-1 defeat to Peterborough United aged 36 years, 4 months and 3 days old.

He finished his career with Burton in 2008, and at the age of 54, he is now their goalkeeping coach.

Barnsley-born Shirtliff actually started his career in the Sheffield Wednesday youth ranks and went on to have two spells with the club.

In 1995, he joined the club from Wolves and went on to have two years at Oakwell, with a loan spell at Carlisle United in the middle of that.

In November 1997, he featured in a 4-1 away defeat to Southampton aged 36 years, 7 months and 2 days old.

The centre-half hung up his boots in 1997 and then had managerial spells in charge of Mansfield Town and as a caretaker at Bury.

Moving into the top three and Delap comes in at third.

He came through the ranks at Carlisle Untied before joining Derby as a youngster.

He spent most of his time at Stoke City in his career and spent six years in Staffordshire, before joining Barnsley on loan in 2013.

Delap made six league appearances for Barnsley before leaving at the end of the season. He left Stoke permanently and joined Burton Albion before finishing his career.

In March 2013, he featured in a 1-0 home win over Watford at the age of 36 years, 8 months and 10 days old.

He's since had coaching roles at Derby County and Stoke City.

Missing out on top spot is Keith Curle.

Curle is best known for a manager these days, having time in charge of the likes of Notts County, Carlisle United, Northampton Town and now with Oldham Athletic.

He did have a good playing career, though, and joined Barnsley in 2002 shortly after leaving Sheffield United.

In October 2002, he featured in a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City at Oakwell at the age of 38 years, 10 months and 28 days old.

He finished his playing career at Mansfield Town and is now an experienced manager in the lower leagues.

Finishing at number one and the oldest player ever to feature for Barnsley by some distance is Mike Pollitt.

Pollitt endured an excellent career as a player, playing for plenty of clubs including the likes of Manchester United, Wigan Athletic, Rotherham Untied and Chesterfield.

In August 2013, he joined Barnsley on a month-long loan from Wigan Athletic, and featured in 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

At that time, was aged 41 years, 6 months and 16 days old.

He is by far the oldest player to have ever played for Barnsley. Were you aware of this?
