Rotherham United are preparing for life back in League One after being relegated from the Championship on a dramatic final day of the season.

The Millers led Cardiff City for a long period and it seemed as if Paul Warne's side were set to pull off a hard-fought escape from relegation but unfortunately for fans of the South Yorkshire club, they couldn't keep the Bluebirds out.

The good news is that Warne has recently confirmed that he will lead Rotherham next season as they look to bounce straight back up, while there have also been reports indicating he's about to go on a shopping spree of sorts.

Last season was a testing one for Millers fans and they may well be appreciating a bit of a breather at the moment.

It's going to be a busy summer though and you'd imagine plenty of supporters will be swapping their Rotherham shirts for an England one for the upcoming European Championships.

The Millers have had some brilliant English players over the past 20 years (from the start of the 2000/01 season), here are our top 10...

Though Matt Derbyshire only spent two years at Rotherham, he was a player that really seemed to understand and embrace what the club was all about.

Top scorer in both of his seasons at the club, the forward gave so much more than his 18 goals in 74 appearances suggest – though those goals were crucial at the time.

He gave his all every time he pulled on the shirt and was a key figure in the dressing, twice helping the Millers stay in the Championship.

Derbyshire is a player that has bounced around numerous clubs in his lengthy career but you feel he'll always be welcome at the New York Stadium.

What a bargain Michael Smith has proven to be.

Signed from Bury in 2018, the forward in January 2018, Smith grabbed nine goals and three assists as he helped the Millers secure promotion to the Championship in his first season at the club.

The powerful forward has continued to impress in the seasons since, scoring 12 times as Rotherham won promotion again last season and top-scoring again for Warne's side this term.

You certainly wouldn't bet against him firing the Millers back up to the Championship next season either and if he does, he may rise even higher on this list.

When there's talk of contributing to promotion-winning campaigns, it's hard to look far past Alex Revell.

The forward was a mainstay in the Millers side between his arrival in 2011 and his departure in January 2015 – helping the Yorkshire club climb from League Two to the Championship in that period.

Revell scored 34 goals and added 20 assists in that period, with his attacking contributions vital to their promotion success.

At no point was that truer than in 2013/14 when he scored three times in Rotherham's play-off run, including twice in the final against Leyton Orient – talk about clutch!

Talking of service, Richard Wood is certainly someone that has given his all in a Rotherham shirt.

The longest-serving player in Warne's squad and a key figure throughout his stay, the powerful centre-back is more than just a solid defender.

He's proven himself a threat in the opposition box, contributing to 24 goals in a Rotherham shirt, but more than that he's been a fantastic leader.

Wood helped the Millers stay up in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, as well as playing his part in their last two promotion-winning seasons to the Championship.

He's not done yet either, having extended his stay at the club in April.

Recognisable now as the Coventry City manager, many Rotherham fans will remember Mark Robins for a very different reason.

During his playing days, it was his goals that helped the Millers win relegation to the second tier in 2000/01 and stay there the following season.

Few players have hammered in goals for the Millers in quite the way that Robins did during his three-year period at the South Yorkshire club, hence why he features above the likes of Smith, Revell, and Derbyshire.

You simply cannot argue with 44 goals in 107 goals, in what was surely the most fruitful spell of his career.

Had more of Paul Hurst's 400+ appearances for Rotherham come past the year 2001, the defender would certainly be higher up on this list.

Even so, it was impossible not to include him such were his services to the South Yorkshire club.

A key figure in the Rotherham side in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hurst was as reliable as they come on the left-hand side of defence.

When he left in 2008, it brought to an end a 15-year spell at the club and one that will not be forgotten by supporters.

The man that Rotherham fans voted their greatest-ever captain was always going to feature high up and number four seems the right place for him.

Just like Hurst, he would've featured higher could we properly take into account his exploits before the start of the 2000/01 season.

Even without that, his leadership and quality as a midfielder mean that he's written his name into club folklore and cemented a place on this list.

He may have only been at the club for three years but the impact that Watson had was massive and we're not just talking about the promotion-winning campaigns.

A midfielder capable of moments of absolute magic.

Few players, if any, were more important to Rotherham's rise from League Two to the Championship than Ben Pringle.

In the club's back-to-back promotion-winning campaigns, he contributed a brilliant 15 goals and 25 assists.

Production aside though, football is all about entertainment and Pringle has been one of the Millers' great on-pitch performers.

His wand of a left foot has brought such joy to so many fans of the South Yorkshire club and that's why he features so highly on this list.

Few things are more important in football than good goalscorers and no one has found the net for Rotherham with more conviction over the past 20 years than Adam Le Fondre.

The 34-year-old's career has seen him feature for numerous English clubs, play in the Premier League and abroad but nowhere has he been able to recreate the form he showed for the Millers.

55 goals and 13 assists in 103 appearances is a frankly ridiculous record.

Le Fondre was snapped up by Reading in 2011 but for those magical two years, he features at number three on our list.

There may be some debate over who exactly should take top spot but for us, it's impossible not to go for Lee Frecklington.

Time and time again, Frecklington wrote himself into Rotherham folklore during his five-plus year stay at the club.

From his domination of League Two and then League One as he helped the Millers win back-to-back promotions to his role as Neil Warnock's men defied the odds to stay up, the midfielder never failed to impress.

Were there more technically talented players? Perhaps. Longer serving players? Yes, definitely. But football is about so much more than just that.
