There's a lot for Millwall fans to be excited about looking ahead to next term.

Gary Rowett's first two seasons in charge have seen the Lions finish 8th and 11th, so you feel he'll be desperate to ensure the club can take the next step in 2021/22.

Keeping the current side together will be key to that, as will be adding some more quality through the transfer market.

Next season looks set to bring the return of fans, which will surely boost Rowett's side at The Den.

Before then, Millwall supporters will likely be swapping their blue shirt for a white one with Gareth Southgate's England team hoping to win this summer's European Championships.

The south London club has had some fantastic English players over the past 20 years and today, we've ranked the top 10 best to have played for them during that period.

Let us know if you agree...

Next is one of three players on this list that are currently at the south London club.

Shaun Hutchinson has become a rock at the back for Millwall in recent seasons and when fit been nearly ever-present in the side since his arrival from Fulham back in 2016.

A commanding and powerful defender, Hutchinson is a leader as well and often wears the armband for the Lions.

If he can help Rowett's side reach the play-offs and beyond in the next few seasons, he'll certainly climb up this list.

A constant presence next to Hutchinson in the Millwall backline, Jake Cooper features one place higher than his current teammate.

Cooper is a physical defender and a real nuisance in the opposition box, as his 15 goals and 14 assists since joining from Reading illustrate.

The 26-year-old has proven a fantastic signing for the Lions and only looks to be getting better as time goes on.

He's already mustered more than 200 appearances for the south London club and supporters will be hoping he remains at The Den to push that figure even higher.

Just like Hutchinson, Cooper helped Millwall secure promotion to the Championship and then establish themselves there.

Talking of players that were crucial to Millwall's most recent promotion, Lee Gregory is a player that simply had to feature on this list.

The striker's goals were vital to their success in 2016/18 and to ensuring that they remained in the division in 2018/19.

When Gregory left in 2019, the 32-year-old had scored 76 goals and added 28 assists in 238 appearances for the south London club – an impressive return.

His Millwall career is made all the more impressive by the fact they signed him from National League side Halifax Town.

The only player to ever lead a Millwall side out in an FA Cup final, Matt Lawrence comes in at number seven on our list.

As this list shows, there have been a fair few impressive English defenders that have played for the south London club over the past 20 years and Lawrence is certainly among them.

Featuring as both a right-back and a centre-back, he made more than 200 appearances for Millwall and contributed to some of the biggest moments in their modern history.

As well as skippering in the FA Cup final, he featured in both their UEFA Cup games.

When it comes to service to the club, there can be few that have given more in the modern era than Tony Craig.

A Millwall stalwart for 15 years, the central defender made 322 appearances in total and twice helped them secure promotion from League One to the Championship.

Perhaps not the most technically talented player on this list but few could argue they gave more for the shirt.

Craig was part of the furniture at the club for much of the past 20 years and is fully deserving of his place on this list.

The third of the three current Millwall players on this list, Jed Wallace's quality simply could not be ignored.

The winger originally joined on loan when he signed from Wolves back in 2016 but became made that move permanent in January 2017 and hasn't looked back since.

A constant threat and a player that's able to create moments of magic, Wallace helped Millwall secure promotion in 2016/17 but his exploits in the Championship have been even more impressive.

Over the past two seasons, the 27-year-old has scored 20 goals and added 19 assists, supporters will be hoping he keeps that going next year.

Paul Robinson gave it all for Millwall every single time he pulled on the shirt and he did that a fair few times.

Having come through the south London club's academy, English centre-back spent the best part of two decades at The Den notching up more than 350 appearances.

Robinson featured for Millwall in the top three tiers of English football and was a regular fixture when they won promotion back to the Championship via the League One play-offs in 2009/10.

A proper servant to the club, someone that understood what it means to pull on the shirt, and a player that deserves recognition.

Perhaps a shock inclusion but it was impossible not to include the current England captain on our list, even if he's played his best football away from Millwall.

A loan move from Tottenham brought him to The Den in 2011/12 and saw him bag nine goals in 27 appearances.

Few Millwall fans can honestly say they'd have predicted then that Kane would go onto have the success he's had, both in the Premier League and on the international stage.

Unseating our top two would take some doing but if the 27-year-old led England to European Championships glory this summer, he might just do it.

Our number two plied his trade for Millwall during the early 2000s and just like the man above him, is recognised for his qualities on the pitch and the touchline.

Having made his name at Chelsea, the midfielder joined from Leicester City in 2002 and became the club's player-manager.

Among other things, Dennis Wise would lead them to their first and only FA Cup final appearance before subsequently taking them into Europe.

Quite some resume for a three-year stint at the south London club, that, but surely nothing on this list's number one.

Who else could have possibly topped this list?

There's a strong argument to be made that only Barry Kitchener sits above Neil Harris when it comes to the greatest Millwall players ever.

A club legend in the full meaning of the word, having given his all and proven his quality as both a player and a manager.

As a player, Harris was a brilliant striker and contributed to many of the club's most memorable moments from the past two decades.

Millwall's all-time top scorer and their best English player from the last 20 years.

The fact he returned to manage the club is merely the icing on the cake.
