It is probably fair to say that the 2020/21 season can be described as a rather successful one for those associated with Luton Town.

Having only avoided relegation to League One on the final day of last season, the Hatters endured no such issues this time around, with Nathan Jones' side claiming an impressive 12th place finish in the final Championship table.

That is something the club will now be looking to build on next season, meaning they could be set for a busy transfer window over the summer, as they look to strengthen their squad even further ahead of the new campaign.

This summer, those events will be taking place against the backdrop of the rearranged European Championships, where we imagine many Luton fans will be backing England to go all the way to continental glory, with the winner set to be crowned at Wembley in July.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look here, at ten of the best English players to have represented Luton in the past 20 years.

We start this list with a member of Luton's current squad, in the shape of striker Danny Hylton, who joined the club following his departure from Oxford United in the summer of 2016.

Hylton would then go on to score over 20 goals in each of his first two seasons at Kenilworth Road, and helped the club to memorable back to back promotions from League Two to the Championship between 2017 and 2019.

Admittedly, the goals haven't flowed as much for Hylton in the second-tier, but the 32-year-old remains a stalwart of the squad, and his contribution to the rise through the leagues mean he ought to be a popular figure for many a Luton fan.

Admittedly, the majority of Johnson's games for the club came more than 20 years ago, but given his playing time with the club ended in 2003, he is just about eligible for this list.

As a result, it would seem harsh not to include the defender, who became such an outstanding servant to the Hatters, throughout his long career with the club, having never represented another team at senior level, after graduating from the club's academy in 1986.

In total, Johnson made 440 appearances in all competitions for Luton, playing in all four divisions for the club, while also being given the role of captaining the club, having become such a pivotal figure for them over the years.

Tyler made the drop down two divisions from League One with Peterborough when he joined Luton in the summer, following the Hatters' relegation to the Conference.

The goalkeeper would go on to become a stalwart between the posts for Luton over the next seven years, eventually helping the club win promotion back to the Football League as Conference champions during the 2013/14 campaign.

In total, Tyler made 297 appearances in all competitions during his time at Kenilworth Road, where he would often demonstrate the sort of ability with his performances between the posts, that suggested he did indeed deserve to be playing further up the football pyramid.

Another long-serving Luton player, Spring began his senior career with the Hatters in 1997 after graduating from the club's academy.

The midfielder would remain with the club until the summer of 2004, when he moved to Leeds after making just short of 300 Hatters appearances, and scoring 30 goals, and having been a regular feature during Luton's fourth-tier promotion-winning campaign of 2001/02.

Spring would then return to the club in January 2007, where he would go on to make another 54 appearances and scoring 14 more goals for Luton over the next year-and-a-half, although he was unable to prevent the club suffering back to back relegations.

Curtis Davies may not have been part of the Luton first-team for as long as some of the others on this list, but he certainly made an impression during his time at Kenilworth Road.

Having graduated from the club's academy to the first-team setup in 2003/04, Davis was a key figure at the heart of Luton's defence during their 2004/05 League One title winning campaign, which earned him a move to the Premier League with West Brom early the following season for £3million, Luton's record player sale at the time.

In total, Davies made 62 appearances in all competitions for the Hatters, with his standout performances earning him a place on The Times' list of Luton's 50 greatest ever players in 2009.

One other English member of Luton's current squad who you feel is well deserving of a place on this list, is Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.

The Hatters were still a Conference club when the midfielder joined them back in 2013, and he is the only from the club's non-league days who is still competing for them in the Championship now, having played a key role in their rise through the divisions with his central midfield presence.

In total, Mpanzu has made 298 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 19 goals, and there will be plenty of Luton fans no doubt keen for the 27-year-old to sign a new contract at Kenilworth Road, if only so he can reach the 300 game milestone, with his current deal approaching its final few weeks.

While he may have only played for them in the Conference, there can be no doubting the quality of player that Luton had during the time that Andre Gray was at Kenilworth Road.

The striker scored 52 league goals in just 97 league games during his time with Luton, including as they won the Conference title in 2013/14, and the fact that he has since gone onto feature in the Premier League for the likes of Watford and Burnley shows just how good he is.

Admittedly, Gray did make his international debut for Jamaica earlier this year, but given he was born in Wolverhampton, and represented England at C-team level while playing for Luton, we're still going to put him forward for a place on this list.

Another Luton Town academy graduate who has already gone on to big things despite still being in the early stages of his career, is James Justin.

Having broken into the first-team at Kenilworth Road while still a teenager, Justin's outstanding performances during Luton's League One title winning campaign of 2018/19 was enough to earn him a move to the Premier League with Leicester City.

During his time with the Foxes, the former England Under 21 international has already he can more than hold his own both at top-flight and Europa League level, although some awful luck with injury has sadly halted his progress for the time being.

Admittedly, the fact that Howard represented Scotland's B-team once may make this a slightly controversial inclusion, but the striker still gets the nod given he was in fact born in England.

Indeed, given the impact that he made during his time at Kenilworth Road, there may not be too many Luton fans arguing with his place on this list, with Howard's prolific form in front of goal proving crucial to the Hatters' rise up the Football League during the early part of this century.

In total, Howard scored 103 goals in 228 appearances in all competitions for Luton between 2001 and 2006, with that form ensuring he was another to earn a place in The Times' list of the 50 best ever Luton players from 2009.

In the end, it seems right that one of Luton's most successful captains ever in Kevin Nicholls, claims top spot on this list.

During his first spell with the club between 2001 and 2006, the midfielder skippered the Hatters to promotions from both the fourth and third-tier of English football, making 187 appearances in all competitions during that five-year stint at Kenilworth Road.

Nicholls then returned to Luton in 2008 in the wake of the club's off-field troubles, and skippered the club to their 2009 Football League Trophy win in infamously difficult circumstances, picking up the Man of the Match award in the final to further cement his place as a Luton icon, with the midfielder another named among the club's 50 best ever players by The Times.
