Coventry City will be eager to get a good summer transfer window under their belts this off-season as they now look to really establish themselves in the Championship.

The last few years have been really positive on the pitch for the Sky Blues with them back in the second tier having worked their way up from League Two in pretty short order in the last few years.

Of course, they'll be looking to get back into the Premier League eventually but, of course, patience may well need to be the key in that regard.

Even so, they've had players over the last two decades that have featured in the top flight and several of them make up the following list concerning the best ten English players to have featured for the club since 2001.

Take a look at our selections and see if you agree with our picks in the following slides...

David Thompson came through at Liverpool and played in the same youth team as the likes of Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher but did not make as many appearances as them for the Reds before moving on.

He signed for Coventry in 2000 and was there until 2002 with him making 69 league appearances during that time and also scoring  17 goals.

He moved to Blackburn in 2002 on the back of that and spent four years at Ewood Park.

Lukas Jutkiewicz is next on our list with him spending two years at Coventry City between 2010 and 2012.

He signed for the club from Everton where he had struggled to get into the side and spent a lot of his time on loan at the likes of Plymouth and Motherwell.

He played over 60 times in the league for the Sky Blues, however, scoring just shy of 20 goals in the league before Middlesbrough signed him.

He's back in the Midlands with Birmingham City now, of course.

Jack Stephens is up next on our list with the defender now at Southampton in the Premier League.

He's made over 100 league appearances for the Saints but his formative years as a player included several loan spells away from St Mary's.

In 2016 he joined the Sky Blues on loan and he made 16 league appearances for the club during that time - it would also prove to be his last temporary spell away from Southampton before he started being more involved in their first team.

He's made 12 appearances for the club this year in the Premier League.

Jack Cork is next on this list with the midfielder now at Premier League side Burnley.

He was on the books at Chelsea as a young player but spent a lot of his time out on loan with him playing for the likes of Bournemouth, Scunthorpe, Southampton, and Watford.

During that time, he also moved to Coventry City on loan with him making 21 league appearances for them in 2009.

Significant permanent spells have since been recorded at both Southampton and Swansea City and now he's at Burnley where he's made over 100 league appearances.

Chris Kirkland is up next with the goalkeeper just about sneaking in thanks to being at Coventry City in 2001.

It probably gets forgotten but, at one point, Kirkland was being tipped to be England's next number 1 after David Seaman retired and his move to Liverpool looked set to be his really big break.

He did, however, suffer from a lot of injuries and that hampered his progress - though he still managed to show what he could do at Premier League level.

He also played for the likes of Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday in his career.

Lee Carsley kicks off the top five with the midfielder naturally best known for his time with Everton in the Premier League.

He was at Derby and Blackburn Rovers before joining Coventry with him playing for the club between 2000 and 2002, making just shy of 50 league appearances for the club.

He moved to Everton in 2002 and made over 160 league appearances for the club in the following years, up until 2008.

He then signed for Birmingham City before ending his career back at Coventry.

Scott Dann has had an excellent time in the Premier League as a defender, playing for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace.

He started his senior playing career at Walsall with the Sky Blues then signing him up in 2008 but he wasn't at the club long before another move came about.

Birmingham City signed him in 2009 and from thereon he's been a Premier League level centre-half, featuring over 300 times in the top flight for the three clubs he's played for.

He's made over 160 league appearances for Crystal Palace.

Callum Wilson scored 22 league goals in 49 league appearances for Coventry City when he came through as a young player.

It was clear quite early on that he was heading right for the top and that he did, moving to Bournemouth in 2014 and going on to play in the Premier League with them and then, of course, Newcastle United where he still is now.

He's made a great start to life on Tyneside and with fans coming back next season in earnest he'll be eager to be the next goal-scoring hero at St James' Park.

James Maddison has had an excellent rise through the football pyramid and is now starring for Leicester City and pushing to be involved with England at the European Championships.

It was clear at Coventry that he could go on to be a top level player and that he has done with a move to Norwich City on the way helping him with that progression.

He's got great quality on the ball and from set-pieces and we've seen that regularly in the Premier League with Leicester since he joined them.

We'll just have to wait and see whether Gareth Southgate is going to call him up.

Jordan Henderson spent a brief loan spell at Coventry City in 2009 with him playing ten times in the league and scoring one goal, having arrived from Sunderland.

He quickly showed he was good enough to be playing in the Premier League with Sunderland, however, and then of course got his move to Liverpool.

Things started slowly for the Reds but he's grown into one of the top midfielders in the top flight and has led the club to Champions League and Premier League glory.

He's an example of what hard-work and never giving up can help you achieve.
