The Sky Bet Championship was the fourth most watched league in the whole of Europe last season, with the unpredictability one of it's major attractions.

Any team in all three of the leagues within the Football League are capable of beating each other and that is what makes them so competitive and exciting.

This time of the season in particular is when even fans of teams not playing in the Football League become intrigued by it, as the race for end of season honours intensifies.

Some clubs will look back on a season of great success, whilst others will be left wondering what could have been, with many more reflecting on a campaign of major disappointment.

Fans of clubs love to point out attendance figures at this stage in a season, justifying their club’s size by a figure stating how many bums on seats they have managed at home games.

It is all good and well filling a ground but teams who don’t fill their stadiums can easily create a better atmosphere.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at the top TEN best atmospheres in the Football League.......

10) Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers could cap an incredible 12 months with a second promotion if things go their way between now and the beginning of May.

Darrell Clarke has overseen a remarkable run of form which has seen his team sit two points away from an automatic promotion spot with just five games remaining.

The people of Bristol are really buying into what Rovers are trying to achieve this season and after a season in the doldrums of non-league, they are now back on the rise.

Rovers’ second successive promotion would se e Clarke’s stock rise no end and would be just rewards for an amazing set of ardent supporters.

9) Nottingham Forest

Admittedly the Reds’ attendances have been the lowest this year for quite some time but when we talk about creating an atmosphere, a full City Ground would be right up there.

When fierce rivals Derby County visited Nottingham in November a packed stadium barely stopped singing for the 90 minutes and deservedly roared their team onto victory.

The rendition of Mull of Kintyre before kick off on match days is really a joy to behold and can leave even the loudest of away supporters struggling to be heard above the home faithful.

Forest will be hoping that a new manager can come in and start something special during next season, which in turn will get more people flocking to the City Ground.

8) Queens Park Rangers

loftus road

With a stadium capacity that is less than that of Notts County’s Meadow Lane stadium in League Two, it might seem quite bizarre to include Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road among the more atmospheric grounds in the Football League.

The thing that makes the ground so noisy is how close to the stands the pitch actually sits and if you are positioned behind the goal, you almost feel as though you are in the back of the net.

The supporters are right on top of the players at Loftus Road and whenever a visit is made to the ground in Shepherds Bush, you can be sure a great atmosphere is in store.

7) Brentford

brentforddd

Griffin Park has been the home of Brentford Football Club since 1904 and it still boasts some old school terracing, which always makes for a great day out for away supporters.

Despite only housing over 12,000 fans in their home, the Bees faithful always throw their voices behind their team and former boss Mark Warburton was very complimentary of the club’s supporters, during their play-off push last season.

One quirky little fact about Griffin Park is that it has a pub on every single corner of the ground, making for some very happy supporters during Saturday afternoon’s.

6) Portsmouth

portsmouth

It is hard to believe that not so long ago Portsmouth were winning the FA Cup as an established Premier League side.

Now struggling to gain automatic promotion from League Two, Pompey’s financial problems in recent years have seen them drop from the top flight into the basement division.

At Portsmouth’s last League Two home game against Carlisle United, over 15,000 fans packed into Fratton Park and their faithful supporters regularly turn the stadium into a cauldron of noise.

Whether or not Pompey secure promotion this season is unsure at this stage but one thing they will always have is Premier League quality supporters.

Pompey’s average attendance this season would put them second in the League One average attendances list, making them one of the best supported clubs in the whole Football League.

5) Burnley

Burnley could win promotion back into the Premier League this season and having been the most consistent team since the turn of the year, few would argue that Sean Dyche’s men deserve their place back in the top flight.

Their supporters have stuck by the Clarets since a real valiant effort at staying in the Premier League last time around and Turf Moor is a really difficult place for visiting sides to go.

There is a real sense around the town of Burnley that if the club go up this season they will spend the money to ensure that they become an established top flight outfit.

4) Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves’ season hasn’t exactly gone according to plan during 2015/16 and their ardent supporters will be hoping for a better fist at the play-offs next time around.

The club were desperately unlucky to miss out on a play-off place last season and missed out on sixth place based on goal difference alone.

The West Midlands-based club still get in excess of 20,000 people through the gates for home games and the Wolves fans are among the noisiest in the Sky Bet Championship.

Boss Kenny Jackett will be hopeful that he can give the supporters something to cheer next season as he looks to take his side back into the play-off picture.

3) Leeds United

leedsleedsss

Leeds United fans are a rare breed. They were deducted 15 points back during their League One days and still finished the season in the play-off places.

Their fans would travel in their thousands if the club was non-league; such is their commitment to the cause of Leeds United Football Club.

Their trademark song ‘Marching on Together’ really does get Elland Road rocking and it would be such a sweet moment for the club’s supporters if they ever reach the Premier League once again.

With Massimo Cellino currently owning the club the top flight looks miles away but you would be hard pushed to knock the club’s support.

2) Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield WednesdaySheffield Wednesda

The Owls have been one of the Sky Bet Championship’s success stories this season and currently boast an average home attendance in excess of 22,000.

The play-off chasing club always sell out away and make some superb noise on their travels and when playing at their Hillsborough home.

Wednesday have always had a ardent bunch of supporters and a place in the Premier League would only increase the average attendance at home games.

The Owls have a great chance of promotion under Carlos Carvalhal, who has assembled a star studded squad and the first game back in the Premier League at Hillsborough would see the stadium rocking.

1) Sheffield United

Sheffield United fansSheffield United fans

The Blades will embark on a sixth season down in the third tier of English football should they fail to win promotion in May, which given their superb support is an absolute travesty.

Bramall Lane is a tough place to go and play. The noise that is created by their supporters is something else and quite frankly the passionate supporters deserve so much better from the team.

Whilst many stadiums in the country will house a section of singers, the Bramall Lane attendees just sing as a collective which creates noise in abundance.

Sheffield United are way too big to have gone without Championship football for six years and I am sure many will agree when I say that it would be great to see them in the second tier again very, very soon.
