Swansea City have developed some much-needed consistency in the goalkeeping department this season as a result of Freddie Woodman's impressive form following his loan move from Newcastle.

Woodman quickly established himself as Steve Cooper's first-choice option between the sticks at the Liberty Stadium, and he has since played every minute of league action for the Swans during a somewhat mixed campaign for the Welsh side.

It would be fair to say Swansea have struggled to find consistency in their overall results this season, but Woodman displays in goal have rescued his side on a number of occasions while he has also made three penalty saves during the campaign.

Swansea will surely push to sign Woodman on a permanent deal ahead of the new season given his strong displays this term, but this could prove to be problematic given Newcastle may want to involve the 23-year-old in their first-team plans next season.

This would then leave Swansea looking short-staffed in the goalkeeping department with Erwin Mulder representing the only senior option for Cooper, and it seems unlikely he would become number one given he has been largely overlooked this term.

The Swans may be forced to explore other goalkeeping options as a result, but there is also a strong chance that Cooper could turn his attention to German stopper Steven Benda who has enjoyed a highly successful loan spell at Swindon Town this campaign.

Benda was initially Swindon's back-up option for the opening weeks of the season, but the 21-year-old then established himself in the side and he has played every minute of league action since mid-October for the League Two promotion contenders.

The German has gained valuable first-team experience during his time with Town, and he will now surely be in a position to challenge for a place in Cooper's plans at the Liberty Stadium particularly given the Swans' boss promotion of youth players.

It seems increasingly likely that Benda will function as Swansea's back-up option between the sticks at the very least next term, but there is every chance Woodman's potential return to Newcastle could also pave the way for him to become the number one.

This would represent a huge step up for Benda given he has been plying his trade in League Two this season, but the fact he has been able to comfortably hold down his starting spot during Swindon's promotion push suggests he has a strong mindset.

Benda certainly could be the answer to Swansea's goalkeeping conundrum if Woodman leaves the club this summer.
