Swansea City striker Sam Surridge has been forced to withdraw from the England U21 squad this week after suffering a knee injury against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Surridge made a cameo substitute appearance at Hillsborough as he replaced Wayne Routledge in the 87th minute to help his side seal a late point against the Owls, but he also managed to pick up the knee problem in the process.

The 21-year-old was in line to make his third appearance for Aidy Boothroyd's U21 side after scoring on his international debut back in October, but the forward will now spend the two-week break recovering from his injury.

Surridge has made an impressive start to life at the Liberty Stadium by scoring five goals in all competitions for the club since his move, even though he has been largely restricted to substitute appearances behind the likes of Andre Ayew and Borja Baston.

However, the Bournemouth loanee has really looked like he is starting to settle in South Wales of late, with Surridge having produced solid performances in each of Swansea's last five matches to move ahead of Baston in the pecking order.

The Spaniard started the season as Swansea's first-choice striker following a prolific start to the campaign, but head coach Steve Cooper has recently opted for Ayew up front of late, with Baston having dropped to the bench.

Cooper has even chosen to bring Surridge off the bench ahead of Baston in the last three matches, which suggests the former Oldham man has now established himself as the club's second-choice forward behind Ayew.

This means Surridge will be desperately hoping his recent injury concern is not serious, as he is now starting to find his feet at the Liberty Stadium, with his late winning goal against Wigan having given him plenty of confidence.

It only seems a matter of time before Cooper hands Surridge his second league start of the campaign, and the forward will be hoping he is fit enough to put himself contention for the clash with Millwall after the international break.

Surridge now looks capable of embarking on a goalscoring run at Championship level after settling into the Swansea side, and it would be hugely disappointing for both himself and the club if an injury was to prevent this.
