Strikers and Peterborough United have been a match made in heaven over recent seasons with a lot of what are now the Football League's most feared marksmen coming through London Road first.

Dwight Gayle, Jack Marriott and Britt Assombalonga are the three who stand out at the moment with Lee Tomlin, Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean also coming through in the past.

Granted, there have been many failures along the way as well, with the likes of Joe Gormley and Ricky Miller the two obvious candidates from recent seasons, but the size of the successes certainly overshadow the failures.

This season the club, led by Steve Evans, appear to have outdone themselves, bringing in three strikers over the summer who have all proven to be deadly in front of goal.

Jason Cummings was the first to emerge, arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest and scoring six times in August alone.

Matt Godden arrived from Stevenage to very little fanfare but has now overtaken his strike partner, netting nine in the league to put him joint top of the division's scoring charts.

Arriving on deadline day was Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney whose quality is clear to see, scoring three times and assisting four more in the process.

The last few games have seen Evans continually tinkering with the front pairing, trying Cummings and Godden, which worked so well at the start of the season, Cummings and Toney and Toney and Godden.

But, for me, there is an obvious choice from the three combinations.

Godden and Toney

Cummings has done well on the whole but has dropped off in recent weeks and has failed to show as much of a striker's instinct as either Godden or Toney.

Three of his goals have come from the spot, whilst Godden and Toney's  have largely come from intelligent runs, clever positioning and clinical finishing.

The 22-year-old offers a physical presence which is essential to an Evans team operating to its full potential. When the ball goes long you need somebody in attack who is tall and bullish and the former Magpie has shown he is the man for the job.

Godden has really impressed me, showing a near-telepathic partnership with whoever he has been partnered with, sliding in brilliant passes or crosses to assist both Cummings and Toney on multiple occasions. That on-field intelligence should not be scoffed at.

It may appear harsh on the Forest loanee after winning the League One player of the month award for August, but it is time for Evans to settle on a pairing within his much-loved 4-4-2.
