Gary Rowett will be desperate for his Stoke City side to put on a positive showing when they travel to Bramall Lane on Tuesday night to face high-flying Sheffield United.

The Potters are far from high-flying after playing 13 games in the Championship since their relegation from the Premier League last season.

They were comfortable favourites to win the second-tier title before a ball had been kicked this campaign and it is easy to see why, after looking at their summer business.

Tom Ince, James McClean, Ashley Williams, Benik Afobe, Cuco Martina and Ryan Woods were all amongst the arrivals. Players who have proven they are either too good for the second tier or are very good at this level.

It is somewhat surprising that Rowett's side currently sit in 17th place in the table, with a 1-0 loss at home to Birmingham City the latest blow to their season.

You get the impression that the former Derby boss is still figuring out his best squad and will be wracking his brain thinking about who he will pick tomorrow night.

So here is the XI we expect him to start with against Chris Wilder's side...

Butland's position in the side is safe.

He has made a few howlers of his own this season but still remains one of the division's best shot-stoppers.

Martina is another who seems to have his place nailed down.

The right-back has been great since arriving from Everton in the summer and it would be a big surprise if he was to be dropped.

It is starting to feel like Rowett has settled on the centre-back pairing he wants to persist with.

Martins-Indi is very much part of that and will be playing on Tuesday night.

And it looks like Williams will be his partner.

The Everton loanee looked like a real coup when he arrived in the summer and although he is yet to live up to those expectations, it would be a shock to see him replaced.

Pieters had a poor game against Birmingham but has been one of the Potters best players this season.

He has a knack for popping up with a goal or an assist and against a Chris Wilder side, that could be key.

Woods has impressed massively since arriving from Brentford in the summer.

His classy presence in midfield is one that has been lacking at the Bet365 Stadium for a long time and he will not be getting dropped any time soon.

He employed a 4-1-4-1 formation against Birmingham on Saturday but expect him to go back to a more defensive 4-2-3-1.

This will most likely mean Fletcher coming in for Bojan to offer more protection to the Potters' back four.

On the left of the midfield trio will be James McClean.

He has only recently returned from injury but his experience at this level and proven quality will be hard for Rowett to resist.

Expect to see Allen pushed further forward for this one.

He has shown that he is capable of playing both in a deep-lying role as well as in an advanced position.

Rowett will most likely want as much experience as possible in his side on Tuesday night will probably mean the Welshman pushing forward.

On the right will, of course, be Ince.

Despite having a stuttering start to life at Stoke, he remains one of the best players in the division and if he is on his game he will be unplayable.

Rowett will be keen to keen to maintain some consistency in attack which will mean Afobe retains his place.

If he goes missing in the match expect to see Peter Crouch come off the bench to offer more of a focal point, but it will be former Wolves man who starts.
