Reports from The Sun on Sunday (08/03, page 59) suggest that Joao Carvalho's future at Nottingham Forest is up in the air.

The 23-year-old - who became Forest's club-record signing for a fee of £13.2m from Benfica last summer - has divided opinions since moving to the City Ground.

Having found regular game time hard to come by under Sabri Lamouchi this season, the Portuguese midfielder continues to be linked with a move away after a two-year stay in the East Midlands.

Discussing the latest speculation and what could potentially lie in store for Carvalho is FLW's George Harbey...

What's been said?

"The Sun (08/03, page 59) claims that Forest are ready to sell Carvalho in the summer, with Olympiacos reportedly eyeing up a £15m move for the creative midfielder.

"The 23-year-old has struggled to cement a place in Sabri Lamouchi's side this season, and these reports suggest that the club are planning to move him on in the summer in order to make way for new, fresh talent.

"Interestingly, Olympiacos are owned by Forest's owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has seen transfer dealings involving the likes of Hillal Soudani and Andreas Bouchalakis materialise in the past.

"If it suits both Forest and Olympiacos as well as the player's needs, then you feel that any potential move would materialise a lot smoother and easier than it would do with any other club in this situation."

How would you sum up Carvalho's time at Forest so far?

"On the whole, the signing of Carvalho just hasn't worked out as of yet and you've got to say that that has been very frustrating indeed.

"The 23-year-old is clearly a very talented player who possesses so much skill and quality on the ball, but his ability to cope with the physicality of the Championship or English football in general has left a lot to be desired.

"He's made only nine starting appearances for the Reds under Lamouchi across all competitions, with summer signing Tiago Silva being utilised as their attack-minded midfielder before he picked up an injury.

"Ultimately, when you pay over £13m for a player, you'd expect him to score more than six goals and add more than nine assists in over 60 appearances in his first two seasons at the club."

Has Carvalho been in this situation before?

"It actually looked as though Carvalho would depart the club in January, with Olympiacos and Trabzonspor being linked with his signature.

"There was a time in January where the Portuguese midfielder couldn't even make the squad along with a number of players like Jack Robinson and Chema Rodriguez - both of those players ended up leaving the club in the end.

"But Lamouchi remained truthful and insisted that Carvalho's omission was solely tactical, and thus, the latter remained at the City Ground.

"You feel at some point, though, this will all come to a head."

Is the criticism of Carvalho fair?

"In football, fans will have very different opinions on certain players - that's just life. But in this case, you have to say that some criticism of Carvalho has been somewhat unfair.

"It was always going to take time for him to settle in England, and just as he looked to be getting better and better under Aitor Karanka, the Spaniard was sacked.

"Then, under Martin O'Neill, Carvalho was essentially frozen out as the Reds looked to keep their dwindling promotion push alive, and when it was too late, Carvalho shone against the likes of Boro towards the end of the season, when he was finally given a chance to impress.

"In the summer, when Lamouchi replaced O'Neill, Carvalho picked up an injury only minutes into their first pre-season friendly of the summer, and that's something he's failed to properly recover from ever since.

"When he's brought on with 20 minutes to play, he's failed to make that real, game-changing impact as of yet, but it's harsh to write him off and point the finger straight at him."

What do you see happening with Carvalho - can you see him being sold?

"The signs are certainly pointing in that direction, when you consider his lack of game time and the close relationship Forest and Olympiacos have.

"With Silva out injured, these next few weeks are the ideal time for Carvalho to prove his worth and show that he wants to be a key player for Forest as they look to make a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

"But if he doesn't make an impression in these next few games, then there's every chance that Silva will return to the starting line-up and Carvalho will subsequently fall back out-of-favour.

"Forest fans haven't seen the best of Carvalho yet, so ultimately, £15m would be a lot of money for them to receive for any player, let alone a, quite frankly, under-performing player."

What would you expect Forest to do with the £15m?

"It's worth noting that a lot depends on which division Forest find themselves playing in next season - if they are in the Premier League, then it would go into a kitty which Lamouchi would use to strengthen his squad all over the pitch.

"If they stay in the Championship, however, then it's keeping the core of the squad together which is more important than anything, and the £15m would be useful in just brushing up a few areas with real quality.

"They are in need of another creative spark, as personally, I feel that they do not score enough goals from midfield or create enough clear-cut chances through the middle.

"With Lewis Grabban now 32 years of age, too, perhaps focus should turn to signing a long-term, proven replacement for the prolific forward, though it isn't as important as the aforementioned need."
