Neither Leeds United or Sheffield Wednesday had seasons they'd have wanted in 2017/18 in the Championship.

Both came into the campaign hoping to build on decent 2016/17 seasons and challenge for the play-offs but it soon became apparent that neither would be able to mount a charge.

Wednesday were really out of the running by Christmas - plagued by injuries - whilst a torrid saw Leeds demonstrate relegation form.

Both, then, need to have a strong summer this time around and with certain transfers of interest to both, it's clearly important that one gets the edge over the other.

Here, then, are three potential deals that could decide who of the two finishes highest next year...

Jack Marriott is a player that many clubs in the Championship seem to want.

The Sun reports that Leeds and Wednesday are among the sides looking at him after a stellar season for Peterborough United.

If he starts well for either side - if he signs - he could be pivotal in their league campaigns.

Keiren Westwood is a top goalkeeper and, arguably, one of the best in the league when on form.

The Sun has reported recently that Leeds are interested in him, too, with them looking short of options in between the sticks.

The Owls will obviously want to keep him, though, and there's no suggestion they won't right now but whoever has him next year will be at an advantage.

Both sides appear to be looking at defensive signings in this window.

According to the Sheffield Star, Wednesday are looking to make a permanent deal for Frederico Venancio happen this summer.

Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Evening Post has Kyle Bartley down as a serious Leeds target this window.

Both could be key to their respective club's hopes if they join so if one side misses out they could end up playing catch-up to the other.
