Carlos Carvalhal has a hugely talented squad at his disposal, and there is little doubt that Sheffield Wednesday should be competing for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship.

There are not many weak links in Wednesday’s playing squad, with the club’s owners helping Carvalhal build his squad during previous transfer windows.

Wednesday’s spending power means that not many members of the club’s youth system manage to break into Carvalhal’s first-team, with Wednesday often turning to the transfer market rather than looking to their academy like many others.

It is hard to argue with Wednesday’s recent strategy, as Carvalhal has guided the Owls to back-to-back play-off appearances – although his side have not been able to end the club’s long wait for a Premier League return.

Despite Carvalhal not opting to use Wednesday’s academy on a regular basis, the Owls do have a number of talented players pushing for an opportunity.

With that in mind, here is a look at TWO wonderkids we believe will save the club millions in the next few years…

Jordan Thorniley

Thorniley is a former Everton youth team defender that linked up with Wednesday ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

The 20-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance for the Owls last year, and is this year on-loan in League Two with Accrington Stanley, where he has made seven appearances in their hugely impressive start to the campaign.

The defender’s contract with Wednesday is set to expire next summer, according to transfermarkt, and the Owls may want to revise that, as Thorniley looks to have a promising career ahead of him.

George Hirst

The 18-year-old is a player that the Hillsborough faithful are desperate to see in the first-team, with the striker impressing at youth level for both club and country.

Hirst’s future at Sheffield Wednesday is in doubt, with plenty of reports over the summer suggesting Leicester City and Leeds United were interested in handing the striker a first-team opportunity.

Hirst is becoming frustrated by the lack of first-team opportunities, and Wednesday will have to try an convince the striker that Hillsborough is the best place for his development, as he is a huge talent.
