Jay Rodriguez has emerged as a potential transfer target for newly-promoted Sheffield United, according to a report from The Mirror.
The striker was in impressive form last season, as he netted 22 league goals for West Brom, as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, after being defeated by eventual winners, Aston Villa in the Play-Off semi-final.
In our latest FLW Six Pointer, we look into this potential deal in more detail…
Firstly, is he capable of playing regularly in the Premier League?
“Rodriguez has already played in the Premier League with West Brom and Southampton and has already shown that he can score goals at that level.
“He’s somewhat of a safe option because he knows what it takes to perform at a high standard in the top-flight on a consistent basis.”
Would he start for Wilder’s side?
“He’d be a certain starter.
“The forward is a better option to have up-front compared to what Chris Wilder already has available to him that’s for sure.
“Both Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick will be fearing for their starting spots, as I have no doubt in saying that Rodriguez would have no trouble in forcing his way into the starting XI if he signed for the Blades.”
What does this mean for David McGoldrick?
“He’s surely going to be tempted by a move elsewhere.
“McGoldrick is an excellent Championship striker, but I’m really not sure that is capable of adjusting to the Premier League if I’m honest.
“Rodriguez would be a much better option to have in their starting XI, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see McGoldrick depart if the Baggies striker arrived.”
How should West Brom fans feel about this rumour?
“They’ll be worried.
“With Dwight Gayle returning to Newcastle, it leaves West Brom light on attacking options with Rodriguez and Hal Robson-Kanu being the only recognised senior strikers.
“If they lose Rodriguez, then they’ll struggle in the Championship next season, that’s for sure.”
How big of a blow would it be to the Baggies if he left?
“It’s a season-defining blow for West Brom if he departs.
“Rodriguez’s record speaks for itself, and he’s a player with real quality that should be playing Premier League football next season.
“West Brom blew their chance to book their place in the Play-Off final, and I think that this could prove costly as key players could be set to depart as they prepare for another season in the Championship.”
Are there better options out there for Sheffield United?
“This is the safe option for Sheffield United.
“Rodriguez is a proven goalscorer and I think that Sheffield United would be making a good signing if they landed his signature.
“He’s got experience of playing in the Premier League, and he’s exactly the type of player that Chris Wilder needs to add to his side as they prepare for life back in the top-flight.”
