Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is set to join Exeter City on a season-long loan deal for the 2021/22 campaign, Owls boss Darren Moore has confirmed.

Dawson has gone on to make 76 appearances for the club's first-team, after coming through their academy ranks in recent years.

But the 26-year-old was restricted to just nine senior appearances last term, and is likely to have been pushed further down the pecking order in Moore's plans heading into the new season.

That's due to the Owls recently signing Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on loan, which saw the loanee involved ahead of Dawson in their recent pre-season friendly win over Port Vale.

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for life in the third tier of English football, after they were relegated from the Championship last term, in what was a hugely frustrating season for the club's supporters to witness.

We ask our Football League World writers what they make of Dawson's seemingly imminent temporary departure from Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Ned Holmes:

Given the recent arrival of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, there can be no real arguments with this decision.

Dawson hasn't made the most of the opportunities he's had in recent years and with Joe Wildsmith already in the squad as a backup, he was excess to requirements after the signing of the Burnley man.

Having three players at the position that all feel they should be first choice could've been a destructive situation and you wonder whether that's played a part in this decision.

Wednesday have built up a head of steam in the transfer market and getting rid of the keeper, even if it is just a loan clears some space on the wage bill for more additions.

For me, it's the right call.

Adam Jones:

It's completely the right decision for Darren Moore to take considering he would have three senior goalkeepers on his books otherwise.

Although Dawson has appeared in pre-season games for the Owls, the arrival of Bailey Peacock-Farrell and continued presence of Joe Wildsmith will severely limit his playing time at Hillsborough.

With this, there's no point keeping him in South Yorkshire and with Moore rating him highly, there's always the chance he could impress on loan in League Two and then come back next season and take the number one jersey with Peacock-Farrell's move to the third tier only being a temporary one.

After Keiren Westwood's departure in the summer and the EFL experience they lost with that, Moore obviously felt the need to bring in a proven Championship keeper and with the former Leeds man coming in, it has set Dawson free in his quest to play more games.

His loan spell in League Two would even be more valuable than being benched at Sheffield Wednesday, so it's a perfect move and a long-term decision that could pay dividends if he impresses at St James Park after shaking off his injury worries.

Jordan Rushworth:

Given Sheffield Wednesday have now secured a move for Bailey Peacock-Farrell it would seem that Cameron Dawson was going to struggle to get regular game time for the Owls in League One next term. Therefore, a loan move for the keeper seems to be the best option for him to try and establish himself as a number one during the 2021/22 campaign.

Dawson has never quite been able to establish himself as Sheffield Wednesday’s first-choice goalkeeper despite having had spells where he has been picked ahead of Joe Wildsmith. At the age of 26, the keeper really needs to be getting more games under his belt and a season at Exeter where he is playing week in week out would surely only be a positive for him.

Darren Moore will be aware that Peacock-Farrell is only coming to Hillsborough at this stage for a season and therefore he will not want to lose Dawson permanently. So, a loan move for him seems like the best solution for all concerned and it would be a coup for Exeter to secure his signature.

A strong season in League Two might be able to persuade Sheffield Wednesday to keep him at the club this time next summer. So, it will be in Dawson’s long-term interest to head out on loan and look to make a real impact for Exeter in the fourth tier.
