Having pipped rivals Doncaster and Plymouth to the League Two title last season on the final day of the season, Portsmouth fans will be hoping their side can repeat the feat and challenge at the top of their new division when the new campaign kicks off next month.

Pompey will have to do so without influential boss Paul Cook however, who departed for Wigan, and are now headed up by former Wolves gaffer Kenny Jackett.

Jackett has maintained the majority of the squad that won the title last season, and has so far added Nathan Thompson, Tareiq Holmes-Dennis and Brett Pitman to his Fratton Park squad, but it is the latter that is stirring up the most excitement on the south coast this summer.

29-year-old striker Pitman has joined Pompey on a three year contract from Championship side Ipswich Town, and fans are excited by the prospect of seeing the Jersey born man in the starting line up, having enjoyed prolific spells throughout the entirety of his career.

96 goals across three spells with boyhood club Bournemouth will raise eyebrows at Fratton Park, with the player obviously feeling well at home on England’s southern coast line.

Less prolific, but still fruitful spells with Bristol City and Ipswich have seen Pitman enjoy a successful career, and he joins Portsmouth with a point to prove having seen some brand his time with the Tractor Boys as a failed venture, despite 14 goals in 61 appearances.

Back in League One, Pitman could really find his feet with the 2008 FA Cup winners, and with the likes of Gary Roberts, Kal Naismith and Jamal Lowe laying on the goals for the 6 ft front man, Pitman could easily surpass the 20 goal marker.

The striker still has age on his side as he begins to enter the second half of his career, and back in the third tier of the game with a side with promotion aspirations, Pitman could present an outside bet for the golden boot next season.
