It's been a season of close shaves for Nottingham Forest and manager Mark Warburton, who would have been delighted to preserve his side's Championship status on the final day.

A superb win over Ipswich Town at the City Ground was enough to keep the Reds up at the expense of Blackburn Rovers but it's clear that this cannot be a situation that keeps cropping up in the East Midlands.

Whichever way you look at it, Forest are a team that certainly shouldn't be lingering down at the bottom of the table in the slightest and they need to pick things up once again going forward.

And that's why this summer will be so important to the future of the club not just now but even as far as five years time.

Warburton will have his work cut out improving his side's ranks but there's one man we think would do a real job at the City Ground if he made a move there this summer.

The man in question? £2.13million-rated Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan, who has been an absolute servant down at the Britannia for some-time now.

But now 33-years-old, the Irish international has slipped down the pecking order a little in Staffordshire and he might be looking for a new challenge over the summer months.

We've seen enough from him over the past few years to know what he's about and he's a ball-playing, crunching midfielder who would be superb at this level for the Reds.

They need passion and fight in their ranks next season and Whelan could be just the man to deliver that.
