Newcastle have one of the best sides in the Championship, laden with talent and a top quality manager and one of the strongest support bases in England.

They sit top of the Championship and are the favourites to run away with it and this month Rafa Benitez is trying to add more stars to an already brilliant squad.

Newcastle boast one of the best defences in the league with Jamaal Lascelles rated amongst the best young English centre backs in the country.

Meanwhile Jonjo Shelvey in midfield has the reputation as one of the best players in the division whilst striker Dwight Gayle is in lethal form.

He has scored 20 goals in 21 games running away with the top scorer award.

Newcastle have been a bit inconsistent recently with defeats to Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday allowing Brighton and Leeds to make ground, but they sit top after a win at Brentford.

Here is the star studded XI they could have by the end of the month if transfer rumours are to be believed....

GK - Karl Darlow

Darlow has been outstanding all season for Newcastle.

The 26- year-old has plenty of Championship experience with Nottingham Forest and is now consistently keeping clean sheets in the Championship, commanding the back line well.

He has put on several outstanding individual displays including a double penalty save against Nottingham Forest.

LB - Paul Dummett

Dummett is a local lad who is playing a big part for the Toon this season, playing 26 games and has hammered down the left back spot.

He is a good attacking outlet down the left linking up well with the midfield whilst also being solid defensively.

RB - DeAndre Yedlin

Yedlin is starting to become a regular at right back for Newcastle and Benitez clearly likes him.

He is a very dependable defensive option but needs to work on the attacking side of his game.

CB - Jamaal Lascelles

He is one of the highest rated young centre backs in the country.

Lascelles has formed an excellent partnership with Ciaran Clark at the back, and they have one of the meanest defences in the division.

He is excellent in the air and a good leader, using his strength to bully opponents.

CB - Ciaran Clark

The former Aston Villa defender looked badly out of his depth in the Premier League and his confidence must of been damaged.

But Benitez has helped him build himself back up and his confidence is clear to see, with him and Lascelles forming an excellent partnership.

CM - Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey is most likely the first name on the team sheet every week as he is good enough to start for most Premier League sides.

He stayed loyal to Newcastle even after relegation and looks a class above the Championship.

CM - Tom Cairney

One of the players linked to Newcastle is talented Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney who has been one of the few midfielders to match the creativity of Shelvey.

Fulham play some of the best football in the division and Cairney drives this with 5 goals and 3 assists and plenty of chances created.

With top class strikers to feed like Gayle and Mitrovic, Cairney would thrive alongside Shelvey.

LM - Sam Clucas

Another strongly linked player is Hull playmaker Sam Clucas who has impressed for the Tigers in his first Premier League season.

After doing well in the Championship last season many questioned if he could make the step up, but so far so good.

CAM - Andros Townsend

The Crystal Palace player moved there from Newcastle last summer after performing excellently for the Magpies towards the end of last season.

He scored 4 goals in 13 games and even though it wasn't enough to keep them up, he earned a move to Crystal Palace with the task of replacing Bolasie.

He has failed to impress so far stoking rumours of a possible return to St James'.

His pace and excellent finishing would be great in this league.

RM - Ryad Boudebouz

He'd have some task dislodging Matt Ritchie at Newcastle but he is an immensely talented player.

Currently playing for Montpellier, he is on international duty with Algeria at the African Cup of Nations and would be a great coup.

He has pace and power and an excellent shot and Gayle would thrive from service from him.

He has 7 goals in 17 games so far in Ligue 1 and is hot property and is strongly linked with Newcastle.

ST - Dwight Gayle

Obviously the one player that won't be out of the line-up is star striker Dwight Gayle.

Gayle had a difficult time of it at Crystal Palace in the Premier League and his confidence was badly damaged.

But under Benitez in the Championship he has been nothing short of brilliant, scoring an incredible 20 goals in 21 games keeping Mitrovic out of the side.
