Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by Scunthorpe United on Saturday falling further behind in the race for automatic promotion after Luton saw off Peterborough with ease.

It was a result that made it three draws on the bounce for Jack Ross's men and perhaps highlighted a further need for January additions.

This was a need that Ross confirmed in his press conference on Monday, announcing that the club are interested in bringing in Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg.

Grigg has a startling record when it comes to League One football, scoring 96 goals in 260 appearances across spells with Wigan, Walsall and MK Dons.

In his last two seasons in the division, he has scored 19 and 21 goals respectively so it is no surprise to see Ross chasing the Northern Irishman so relentlessly.

The Black Cats boss is not exactly short of attacking talent at the moment, however, so Grigg's arrival would certainly give him a dilemma.

But here is one way he could set up his side if he were to arrive...

Right-wing: Lynden Gooch

Gooch has been tremendous for Sunderland this season and his decision to sign a new contract has made him a true fan favourite at the Stadium of Light.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the American has proven to be just as productive on the wing racking up five goals and eight assists across both positions.

Left-wing: Aiden McGeady

McGeady is somebody who Ross may be looking to offload, giving his sizeable wages, but whilst he is with the club it would be foolish not to play him.

The Irishman is a Championship standard player playing in League One and with him on the pitch Sunderland will always have an advantage.

Striker: Josh Maja

Despite being caught up in some contract drama, Maja has continued to play to his best for the club.

A goal against Scunthorpe at the weekend was his 15th of the season, showing that he still has the club at the forefront of his mind.

The prospect of playing alongside someone of Grigg's quality should be very tempting as well.

Striker: Will Grigg

Of course, Grigg will play.

It would be foolish to bench probably League One's stand out player of the last five years as there is a guarantee of him finding the back of the net.

Playing alongside Maja is a very exciting prospect for Sunderland and a horrible one for the rest of the league.
