Sunderland's promotion hopes may be hanging in the balance but that won't stop them from making plans for the summer transfer window.

Football League World have exclusively revealed that the Black Cats are among the club plotting a summer move for Carlos Mendes Gomes.

The Morecambe forward has enjoyed a wonderful campaign in which he's scored 15 goals for the League Two club.

That sort of form is enough to attract substantial interest with the likes of Hull City, Peterborough United, Swansea City, Barnsley, Cardiff City, Luton Town and Huddersfield Town also said to be keen.

A move to Sunderland would undoubtedly be appealing for the 22-year-old, but what are the potential impact that a deal could have on Sunderland this summer? Let's take a look.

Fills a vacant spot in the squad

There's no escaping the fact that Sunderland need a right winger this summer.

While Jordan Jones has spent the second half of the season on loan at the Stadium Of Light, it was always going to be a position that the club were hoping to fill ahead of the new season.

Signing Mendes Gomes wouldn't be a surprise and would mean that it's a troublesome position ticked off on the summer shopping list.

Spells the end of Jordan Jones pursuit

The Rangers winger looks set for an uncertain summer.

After impressing on loan with Sunderland there have been reports that the Black Cats could consider a move for the 26-year-old on a permanent basis this summer.

It's unlikely that Lee Johnson will sign two players for one position, and so if Mendes Gomes does join then it will likely mean that a move for Jones is no longer on the cards.

Chris Maguire's exit

A move for Mendes Gomes would likely spell the end of Chris Maguire's career with Sunderland.

The winger has fallen out of favour since Lee Johnson took charge of the club and there's already a major question mark over his future at the Stadium Of Light.

Bringing in a new winger such as the 22-year-old would all-but confirm that Maguire will move on as it will simply mean increased competition for places if he was to be offered a new deal with the club.
