These are exciting times for Nottingham Forest, with a real sense of optimism at the City Ground heading into the 2018/19 campaign.

Last season, Forest finished mid-table, with Aitor Karanka failing to make a huge impact following his arrival in Nottingham.

However, the Spaniard hasn’t hung around so far this summer, with Forest extremely active in the transfer window.

Karanka’s squad has a different look to it now, with many expecting big things from an exciting group of players.

Joao Carvalho and Diogo Goncalves have been signed from Benfica, whilst Karanka has brought in Championship experience to bolster other areas of his squad.

Here at FLW, we are particularly intrigued to see how Karanka’s midfield unit manages in the Championship, with an exciting mix of experience and flair.

With that in mind, we take a look at the fresh midfield Karanka could name against Bristol City on the opening day of the season…

Watson arrived last January, making an excellent impact in a struggling Forest side.

The midfielder brought real composure and leadership, with his role keeping Forest clear of a relegation fight.

Next season, Forest’s supporters are expecting a lot from Watson.

Alongside Watson, Bridcutt could be the perfect fit.

Neither player has much craft, but they’ll work hard and do an excellent job shielding the defence.

It might not be a midfield pairing supporters are excited about, but they would allow Forest’s new-look attack to express themselves.

Karanka will want to get the best out of Forest’s club-record signing.

Carvalho should feature in an attacking midfield position, and with a solid base behind him, the 21-year-old has the platform to really get forward and influence the game.

Against Bristol City, he will be looking to impress.
