The Portsmouth ace proving he’s destined for big things

Matt Clarke is winning the plaudits around League One for his early season performances.

Many see him as one of the best defenders in the division and the 22-year-old looks destined for a healthy career at a decent level.

Clarke has featured on 18 occasions this season, becoming a regular feature at the heart of Pompey’s defence.

He is a typical modern day defender, who is equally adequate both on and off the ball.

He has a cultured style of defending and is very comfortable on the ball as well, often driving forward from defence to start attacks.

Clarke is good in front of goal too. His equaliser in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Burton was his third goal this term – equaling his tally for the whole of last season.

Lee Brown, Clarke’s teammate, was very complementary when talking to the club’s website recently, saying: “I think he can go to the top. I think most people who come to the game on a Saturday will think that as well.

“From my time in the league, he’s one of the best and he’s going to have a fantastic career.”

The praises stretch further than his colleagues, with many fans of the Fratton Park club complementary of Clarke, who looks destined for a career at a high level.

Portsmouth are top of League One and look set to complete another promotion, as they look to rebuild their club at a high level.

Clarke is one of the best players in League One and if he carries on his performances, Pompey will surely be favourites for the league title.

Next up for Clarke’s side is a trip to Accrington Stanley in what promises to be a thrilling clash, so the young defender will have to be at his best.
