Birmingham City found the net a measly 38 times in the Championship last season, the joint lowest tally in the league with relegated Burton Albion.

As the new campaign rapidly approaches, and no imminent arrivals on the horizon, it will be seemingly up to Lukas Jutkiewicz and Che Adams to take on responsibility in front of goal.

With a combined goal tally of 15 last season, I fear the worst for the Blues if they fail to make an attacking acquisition this summer.

However, the permanent signing of last season’s loanee Sam Gallagher could give not only a boost to the squad and help their goal scoring woes, but also to the fans, who are desperate for new faces.

While the 22-year-old only scored seven goals in his 23 starts for the Blues during his loan spell, his potential is second to none in England’s second division, which is why he is linked with a move to a number of clubs.

Gallagher did feature in the Saints preseason tour, but with the likes of Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini all vying for the starting strikers spot, he isn’t likely to feature at all this coming season.

The former England Under-20 international has enjoyed loan spells in the past with MK Dons and Blackburn, and will likely be on the move this summer, with the latter even being suggested as a potential destination for the target man once again.

While the Saints man may prefer a loan move, Gallagher should be on the radar of Garry Monk for a permanent move to add those all important goals to the squad.

With the tall forward attracting such interest from Championship rivals, it is now or never for Monk to secure the Saints youngster as a Blues player.
