It was disappointing day for Birmingham City on Saturday, as their a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrews’ brought their unbeaten start to the Championship season to an end.
In a game that, with the exception of a Scott Hogan stoppage time goal that was ruled out for offside, saw Aitor Karanka’s side pose little in terms of an attacking threat, Barry Bannan’s penalty early in the second half was enough to secure all three points for the visitors.
Despite that disappointment, one source of encouragement from the game for those of a Birmingham persuasion, was the performance of substitute Jonathan Leko.
Brought on with 25 minutes to make his first appearance for the club following his summer move from West Brom, the attacker was impressive in helping lift the Blues’ game, with his attacking instinct and desire helping to at least put some pressire on Wednesday’s backline.
Indeed, that appears to be something that did not go unnoticed by the club’s fans as they took to Twitter to give their thoughts on Leko’s impact on the game.
Here, we take a look at what some of them had to say.
Karanka needs to put his thinking cap on, because performances like that have to stop. So many things wrong that they won't all fit into a tweet. Leko the only positive. #bcfc

Terrible performace, hopefully put it right on Tuesday. Leko was a positive but McGree, Crowley, Clayton looked well off the pace. #BCFC

First defeat of the season then, disappointing and didn’t really get going until the last 10 minutes

Missed sunjic, Leko has to start if he’s fit enough. Whole team needs a mentality switch, just seem to lack urgency. We switched it on in the 85th minute so it’s deffo there. #KRO quite a few beers needed after that #BCFC

Leko looks alright though #bcfc

Said it for weeks now Bela not fit looks shell of the player he was last season. Leko has to start going forward. Also Hogan put a shift in. Australian kid it's hard to judge he will need time but he doesn't look good atm #bcfc

Things to take from that game:
Leko HAS to start next game. Seems there could be a really good partnership formed with him and Hogan.
Sunjic is too vital for our midfield. Players like Crowley, Bela & Sanchez are irrelevant when you don’t have a ball winning midfielder #BCFC
