Andrija Novakovich has been a forward that most Reading supporters have been excited about all summer ahead of the start of the new season.

After having his first full pre-season with the senior squad, and getting plenty of minutes - including against Chelsea - it looked like Novakovich was going to be a main stay this season.

However, once more the American has dropped back into the Under-23s and will perhaps feel hard done by in his attempts to impress José Gomes.

He knows that he did very little different to another Academy graduate in Danny Loader during pre-season. Although, Loader is still around the squad and even started the opener.

On Monday Afternoon, the U23s played Newcastle. Reading ran out 6-0 winners, and Novakovich scored a hat-trick. The impressive 22-year-old is staking a much larger claim to be part of the senior squad than other more experienced forwards such as Sam Baldock.

The striker himself will be feeling that there isn't much more he can do to get into José Gomes' squad. Novakovich would have been targeting the Carabao Cup game on Tuesday night as a perfect opportunity for himself to get some minutes - but due to his involvement on Monday, this is unlikely.

He'll surely be feeling frustrated. Competitive game time is so important for a player of his age. In pre-season he did all he could to cement a place in the squad, and now he will feel he hasn't even had the chance to show whether he is capable.

The United States International is at a time in his career when playing football, regardless of who for, is vital to the development of his own game.

Last season, he spent the campaign out on loan at Fortuna Sittard. A Dutch team who play in the Eredivise (Best league in Netherlands) allowing him to test himself against the likes of Ajax and PSV.

He fared well. Novakovich scored nine goals and became an integral part to a side that proved a lot of doubters wrong. He'll be feeling that he is now ready for the Championship.

Due to his encouraging season, Gomes decided not to loan him out again. However, after the last week of the transfer window Novakovich may be sat wondering how he's ever going to get a game. The forward will have a sense that he is being left out in the cold after big money signings Lucas Joao and George Puscas joined the club.

Not just on the pitch, but off it, Novakovich has a big decision to make. Does he sign a new contract or not?

On the one hand, he is still 22. He has a long journey ahead of him and time to achieve the different career objectives that he wants too. So he may be inclined to stick around for a bit longer at a club that has helped him for years.

Whilst on the other hand, he will be wanting to play and needing to play. With the youngster falling further down the pecking order, it's right that he'll be frustrated and perhaps want to start looking for a new club.
