Derby County pulled off one of the shocks of the season as they overturned a two goal deficit against Leeds United to book their spot in the play-off final.

A brace from Jack Marriott, along with goals from Harry Wilson and Mason Mount saw the Rams run out 4-2 winners on the day.

Stuart Dallas netted a brace of his own for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but it wasn’t enough as Derby sealed their place at Wembley later this month.

One negative for Lampard on the day, was Scott Malone’s red card for a second bookable offence for a challenge on Leeds’ Pablo Hernandez.

Malone has looked impressive in recent weeks, and certainly nullified the threat posed by Leeds’ talisman in the win in midweek.

Ashley Cole came on to play his part in the win following Malone’s red card, and he’s likely to start the final at Wembley later this month now.

Cole has been a useful option to rely on for the Derby boss, and Lampard will know exactly what the experienced full-back can bring to the team.

He’s made nine appearances in total since signing for the Rams in January earlier this year.

But Malone’s absence could be a blessing in disguise for Derby, as it means that Lampard can count on Cole’s experience in big games for their game against Aston Villa at Wembley.

Derby have had a youthful squad this season, but it’s important that Lampard gets the right mix between the younger players and the more experienced faces in the starting XI.

Players like Cole have been there and done it, having played at the top of his game for a number of years with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as being a regular in the England side.

If Cole can nullify the threat posed by the likes of Andre Green and Anwar El Ghazi in the play-off final, then you have to feel that Derby will fancy their chances of making a timely return to the Premier League this season.

If this is to be Cole’s last season with the Rams, then he’ll be keen to go out on a high, and potentially earn himself one last shot in the top-flight ahead of next year’s campaign.
