Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates could benefit from a loan spell to get some guaranteed game time when he returns to full fitness following recent injury problems.

Yates made 16 appearances and scored one goal for Nottingham Forest last season, having returned to the club following a promising loan spell with Notts County - and also from a relatively successful spell at Scunthorpe United in the previous campaign.

The 21-year-old would have been wanting to make an impression on new manager Sabri Lamouchi during the Reds' pre-season this summer, but Yates was forced to have surgery on his knee during pre-season to try and solve long-term issues with knee troubles – and that means he has missed the start of the Reds Championship campaign.

Forest have flourished without the 21-year-old, with Lamouchi’s side enjoying an excellent start to the season, which has seen them pick up six wins in their opening eleven matches and suffer just a single defeat on the opening day against West Bromwich Albion, to leave them in second place heading into the international break.

Lamouchi’s men have been very strong in midfield in the opening months of the season, with the likes of Ben Watson, Samba Sow, Tiago Silva and Alfa Semedo all making an impression on Forest’s midfield when they have been selected to play.

That suggests that Yates, who is nearing a return to fitness, could well struggle to get straight back into the first team picture at the City Ground this term, and that would be a blow for the 21-year-old, who will be wanting to have regular minutes so he can fully recover from his injury and re-build his momentum.

Therefore, Lamouchi and Forest might be wise to consider sending Yates out on loan again in the January transfer window, with the midfielder already demonstrating that a productive spell away from the City Ground, where he is getting regular minutes, is beneficial to his form upon his return.

Given Yates’ performances over the years, the 21-year-old would likely attract plenty of interest from sides in Leagues One and maybe even bottom half Championship sides, and it would be important for Forest to select the best place for him to get minutes for the rest of the season, if they do elect to loan him out.

It may not be how Yates wanted this season to work out but he will know the value of playing regularly if he is to fulfil his long-term ambitions of starring for Forest.
