Leeds United are making contingency plans in the event that Eddie Nketiah's loan spell is brought to an end.

The striker is currently on loan from Arsenal but has struggled for regular starts at Elland Road with Patrick Bamford being Marcelo Bielsa's preferred option in attack.

Reports have suggested that the Gunners could look to bring the striker back to the Emirates Stadium next month before finding another destination for him to spend the rest of the season on loan.

That means that the Whites could be looking at alternatives.

Reports from Football Insider have suggested that the Whites are plotting an approach for Dwight Gayle.

The Newcastle United forward is out of favour at St James' Park and is reportedly the top candidates to replace Nketiah if Arsenal do bring an end to his loan spell.

The 29-year-old has been struggling with a calf injury so far this term but is now back in action for Steve Bruce's side.

While unproven at Premier League level, Gayle has a wonderful record in the Championship after scoring 24 goals in 41 appearances for West Brom last term.

The verdict

With Eddie Nketiah's future up in the air, a move for a player like Dwight Gayle would be a great move.

The 29-year-old is one of the most prolific strikers at this level and would be a huge boost to Marcelo Bielsa's hopes of securing promotion.
