There is now less than a month until the new Championship season gets underway, and unsurprisingly, that has seen more clubs start to increase their activity in the summer transfer window as they look to improve their squads.

One club who have started to do that is Millwall, who having finished just one place above the Championship relegation zone last season, will be feeling the pressure as much as anybody to make sure they find themselves in a more convincing position in around ten months time.

Among the Lions first recruits of the window is striker Matt Smith, with the 30-year-old making the short trip across the capital to join from Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers.

This is a big move for Millwall to make, signing a striker from one of their local rivals, and given the context that can be taken into account, you could argue that Smith himself will feel that he has a point to make to his former club when he begins his competitive career with Neil Harris' side next month.

Despite never really being a regular starter during his time at QPR, the former Leeds man remained one of the club's more reliable goalscorers, with his height and physicality also making him an effective attacking option for Rangers in ways other than scoring goals.

With The Hoops having also found themselves flirting with relegation in the second half of last season, the fact that they have been willing to sell Smith to a side who they may find themselves battling with for a place in the Championship next season may not go down too well with the player, as it almost suggests that Rangers do not think his move to a potential relegation rival will hurt them.

You could also argue that there will be further incentive for Smith to perform given that new QPR boss Mark Warburton was happy to let him go without actually seeing him perform in a Hoops shirt.

It does however seem as though this is a move that the target man will be confident about.

The departures of strikers Lee Gregory and Steve Morison in this window mean that Millwall would have been looking for fresh options in that position before Smith's arrival, hinting that there should be a decent amount of opportunities for him at The Den.

That is likely to be further enhanced by the the fact Smith suits the Lions style of play and he will be relishing the chance to get back playing regularly next month.
