Sunderland have had a strong start to life in League One and look in a good position to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

However, whilst most clubs see January as a chance to add to your squad to improve, the Black Cats might be slightly nervous ahead of the New Year.

That's because they have several players who are attracting interest from sides in the top two tiers and whilst they will be reluctant to sell, the reality is money talks.

The latest player to be linked with a move away was Tom Flanagan, even though he only joined the north-east side in the summer.

The 26-year-old has formed a solid partnership with Jack Baldwin in defence and HITC Sport report that Swansea are keen on the Northern Ireland international.

With just 18 months left on his deal, Sunderland could need to make a decision on the player, particularly if he pushes for a move, although there's no indication that he will.

And, here we look at how Jack Ross could set up his defence if they did lose Flanagan...

The former Celtic man has been a regular this season and has been very reliable.

After a tough few years he seems to finally be enjoying his football and is a great option at this level.

Should Flanagan leave then Ross will surely turn to the experienced Loovens.

The 35-year-old started the season at the heart of the defence until injury hit. He is a real leader and would be a good influence on the team.

We've mentioned Baldwin already, who looks a smart signing having arrived from Peterborough in the summer.

He is playing well and is sure to be a regular this season at least for the Black Cats.

The former Manchester United youngster is another new recruit that has settled in well to the club.

With Bryan Oviedo another option at left-back, Ross is covered in that position for this season.
