Aston Villa look set to pose a serious push for promotion throughout 2019, with Dean Smith's side showing some impressive form in recent weeks.

Under the former Brentford boss, the club are unbeaten in their last seven matches, winning four and drawing three scoring 21 goals in the process.

With January just around the corner, however, Smith will not want to rest on his laurels, with defensive purchases likely to be his primary focus throughout the approaching transfer window.

The latest name to be linked with a move to Villa is Gent goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic, three years after they had first tried to sign him.

He has made 14 appearances for the Belgian club since the start of the season, keeping three clean sheets in that time.

Smith is apparently keen to bring in a new shot-stopper in order to force the unreliable Orjan Nyland out from the sticks.

So how could the Villa back-line shape up with their new number one?

You cannot see Nyland hanging around in goal past January.

Kalinic would, therefore, go straight into the side and with such dodgy back-up will find it incredibly hard to lose that place.

If he comes in, he can expect to be the club's number one from here on in.

Hutton will most likely continue at right-back.

He has been far from outstanding, but a collection of solid appearances make him the best available option.

A new right-back in January would not go amiss, however.

The club captain will retain his place.

Chester had a tricky start to the season playing alongside Mile Jedinak in defence but has seen a resurgence since Steve Bruce departed.

He remains one of the club's most important players.

Much-like Chester, Tuanzebe has really impressed since Bruce left.

He was shoved out onto the right-hand side of defence where he did not exactly thrive, but having moved back to the centre under Smith has shone.

His composure on the ball make him the perfect partner for Chester.

Taylor has been a solid presence so far this season.

He is noticeably past his peak, but can still do a job in the Championship.

Like Hutton, however, if they can find an upgrade in January they should go for it.
