Swansea City have triggered a clause in defender Mike van der Hoorn's contract which will keep him at Liberty Stadium until 2020, it has been confirmed on the club website.

"It was an obvious one for us - Mike has been great," said Swansea manager Graham Potter adding, "Mike has developed as a leader and as a person. The challenge for him now is to be a Premier League centre-back and we will try to help him get there."

Dutchman van der Hoorn continued his run of starting every Championship game this season as Swansea drew 2-2 with Hull City at the weekend.

The new deal scuppers any summer plans Aston Villa may have had for signing the Dutchman, having previously been keen on making a move for him.

So will this development have ended Villa hopes of signing van der Hoorn?

We discuss.......

Benjamin Lang

"Yes. Van der Hoorn has been a big performer for Swansea this season, as he has repaid the faith the club has shown in him.

"The new contract suggests he is settled at the club and believes he can help them to promotion.

"However, there will always be the fear with their owners that Swansea have only triggered the extension to increase his market value."

Toby Wilding

"Not necessarily.

"Promotion would earn Villa a significant financial prize, and you feel Swansea could do with some funds of their own given reports around their own finances.

"Even if it doesn't happen this summer, it is only a 12-month extension for Van der Hoorn, so Villa may simply need to bide their time with this one."

Alfie Burns

“If Villa really want him, you feel they’ll go out and get him in the end.

“Of course, this makes things more tricky, but the pull of playing for Villa under Dean Smith will be enough to persuade the centre-back to push a move in the end.

“There’s a long summer ahead for Swansea.”

Gary Hutchinson

“It dents them, surely?

“Any extension signals and intent by the owning club to keep their players.

“It might not deter Villa of course and Swansea have been a selling club.

“It might just have stuck a million on the price tag.”
