Portsmouth were desperate to achieve promotion back to League One in the summer of 2016 as Paul Cook looked to put last season's playoff disappointment behind them.

Pompey were knocked out in the semi-finals by Plymouth Argyle in what were a dreadful couple of games for the south coast side.

But a summer revamp was well underway in preparation for the 2016/17 season with Cook bringing in 14 new faces in an attempt to push them over the promotion line, with the likes of David Forde, Danny Rose, Milan Lalkovic and Noel Hunt making the move to Fratton Park.

Improving the attack seemed to be Cook's priority and another striker they brought in was Curtis Main from Doncaster Rovers.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at big decision made by a club in recent years, analyse the initial reaction and see what happened next.

It was a signing that immediately underwhelmed the Pompey fans.

Main's goalscoring record was hardly impressive before moving to the club, scoring just 28 goals in his previous nine years of professional football.

The fans wanted somebody who could come in and win the golden boot, firing the club to promotion on the way.

This season was to be no different for the former Doncaster Rovers and Middlesbrough man.

He did score on his debut for his new club, however, netting in a 3-2 defeat to Coventry City in the League Cup.

His opening league matches showed signs of promise as well, and when he scored twice against Crawley Town it looked as though he may just come good.

But that was to be the end of his goalscoring exploits for Cook's side.

He did not start another game for the club that season and was limited to small cameos from the bench.

When hamstring problems crept into his game after Christmas the writing appeared to be on the wall as he failed to make another appearance in the season.

Pompey were promoted, winning the League Two title, but the fans were clearly right in that Main would play very little part in that achievement.
