Sheffield Wednesday were starting to sink rapidly under Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Four months on from his departure, Wednesday have managed to steady the ship thanks to the help of new manager Jos Luhukay.

Carvalhal himself has found a new job with Premier League Swansea City where he has steered them away from the bottom three.

Here's why Carvalhal was right to leave:

He took them as far as he could

Under Carvalhal, the Owls endured two very promising campaigns.

In his first season, he took them to the Championship play-off final which they lost to Hull. His second season saw them reach the play-off semi-finals where they lost to eventual winners Huddersfield.

However, at the start of this season, fans were expecting another promotion push.

Like Mark Hughes at Stoke, Carvalhal had taken Wednesday as far as he could. This showed as he was unable to improve on the past two seasons, and instead threatened the club with relegation.

Helped turn the club toxic

In the latter stages of his tenure at the club, Hillsborough had turned toxic.

Fans voiced their displeasure at Carvalhal came under a lot of fire from the fans.

Owls supporters thought that he had run out of ideas, and a new man was needed to take the club forward. After all, you're never going to be a popular man when you lose 4-2 at home to your rivals.

Eventually, they got what they wanted when Carvalhal left in December by mutual consent.

Jos Luhukay has turned it around

Carvalhal's successor Jos Luhukay has helped clear up the mess left by Carvalhal.

Despite not having the best of starts in charge, Wednesday have now won their last three games with Nuhiu and João now hitting form.

At one point Wednesday looked like they would be in a relegation scrap, but thanks to Luhukay the Owls will be able to rebuild for next season.

Fans have quickly retracted statements about wanting Luhukay to leave, and it looks like he has saved the club from a potentially disastrous season.
