Though their automatic promotion chances are not dead yet, in reality it will be the play-offs that Sunderland need to win, if they are to make an immediate return to the Championship.

A 1-1 draw against promotion rivals Portsmouth leaves the Black Cats needing a major collapse by all the clubs above them is they are to nick an automatic promotion spot.

So if Sunderland do not get promoted via the play-offs, will manager Jack Ross be in for some criticism?

We discuss...

Benjamin Lang

"Yes, but I don't think it should cost him his job.

"Sunderland have had a tough few years which has made it difficult for Ross to instigate a rebuild, and he has done well.

"But they need to finish the job now, especially after losing the Checkatrade Trophy. It would represent a disappointing season if they fail to win promotion."

Toby Wilding

"It's a difficult one.

"I can see why there would be frustration and disappointment, given how Sunderland looked to be in such a promising position for so long, although it should be remembered that Sunderland were in freefall at the start of the season.

"So to get them close to an immediate return to the Championship deserves some credit."

Alfie Burns

“That squad should be getting promoted, but nothing is ever that straightforward in football.

“Ross deserves credit for helping to stabilise the club in my eyes, and although promotion was the aim, you can’t be overly critical.

“The long-term project needs to be Sunderland’s focus.”

Gary Hutchinson

“No.

“The play-offs are a big ask and to be in the top six is an achievement.

“However, having spent £4m on a striker, maybe there’s room for comment.

“Could he have got two players at £2m, or four at £3m, all of whom would have added strength?”
